I totally agree. I found it just as easy, if not easier than WW, but that may or may not be because I'm a better gamer from when WW came out. It only took me about 40 hours to complete the entire game, and I annihilated every sidequest (all heart pieces, all poes, etc.). Considering I did all that in about 40 hours, I don't think this game is comparibly longer than Wind Waker. In general, I really don't think Twilight Princess lived up to what Nintendo said it would be. In fact, I would go as far as saying that they lied.
It makes sense that the Mask Salesman can travel between the door to Termina/Hyrule any time he wants, but that may mean that he'd discovered it long ago, and found how it works so he's able to open and close it whenever he wants. He probably just travels between the worlds to further his mask selling and collecting business. As for his reasons to want the mask, he does state them in the beginning. He explains that he wants the mask back to ensure it's not in the wrong hands and it doesn't harm any citizens of Termina and/or Hyrule. I don't remember how he got the mask, though...I think he said something along the lines of finding it in his travels or something. Anyway, the four children on the moon definitely look a lot like the Happy Mask Salesman, so I assume that them and the salesman are of the same race. It's probably some freakish mask worshipping race. =P
The Mask Salesman is surely a shady character in the Zelda series, and I hope we learn more of him in the future.
These hints are WAY too vague. Do you realize how many characters in the Zelda Universe require you to work, and are also vital to your quest? Rauru wants you to work to save the land which is obviously vital...Darunia wants you to work to save the Goron City, and even Zelda wants you to work to save her. This is just mentioning a few. :\
