Many people happen to forget that the PSP has a sleep mode, which is essentially the "pick up and play" thing you guys seem to talk about. I use it all the time if I'm playing and I have to stop for some reason. Besides, not ALL DS games are pick up and play, and there are pick up and play games for the PSP. Neither system seems to be lacking in that department.
Yes, Nintendo has dominated the handhelds. However, Sony was dominating the home consoles for a while as well and, well, you know... It didn't get the top spot this time. Who knows?
If you didn't notice, GameStop has leaked the pre-order price for the NGP at $300. Now, this is better than the $999.99 placeholder they put on every new console. Sony and Nintendo fanboys were raging about that for weeks, when the 3DS had the same problem... Anyway, my point is, there's a good chance that the NGP won't cost upwards of $350. Sony released a statement saying their price will be based on the success of the 3DS. If it sells too well, Sony will probably lower the price to compete. They aren't dumb enough to make that mistake again. Frankly, I think the 3DS's selling point will be it's 3D screen and the first-and third-party support. That makes sense, actually; it's called the 3DS for a reason. People tend to name their products descriptively, and it doesn't get any more obvious than 3DS. The only real problem with the 3DS is it's potential to be harmful to the gamer. If you don't sit there and play it with 3D on for too long, you should be fine, but going on a 3- or 4-hour 3DS marathon doesn't seem like a very good idea. Besides that, I'm also concerned that the 3D could lower the potential framerate. Gamers don't like long load times; the PSP proved that. The NGP's selling point isn't exactly clear, but I will take a gander at it. I think, with all the new tech on the PSP, their major selling point will be playing console-quality games. For some people, that's not all that special; for others, the ability to take games like MGS with you wherever you go would be like having a Super Smash Bros game on your DS. That's cool. Besides that, the one thing that could prevent the NGP from selling is pretty reminiscent to the PSP; the price. If Sony prices the NGP too high, they will lose customers. If they price it too low, they'll lose money. What they need to do is to wait and see how well the 3DS does, then balance their priorities. They do have the potential to sell more than Nintendo, but only if they do it right. I own an NES, GameBoy, GameBoy Color, GameBoy Advance, GameBoy Advance SP, DS, DS Lite, DSi, GameCube, Wii, Playstation, PS2, and a PSP. In terms of portable consoles, I know them all well enough to say what I've said confidently. In terms of consoles, the Wii is the console I tend to play the most, but that's probably because I don't have many PS2 games... I prefer the PSP in terms of portable gaming, but nothing beats a Wii when I'm at home.
