Microsoft is being under intense pressure on all fronts: consoles (1 M less XBOX ones sold compared to PS4), laptops and tablets (iOS, chromeOS), smart phones (iOS and Android), business PCs, and now gaming PCs. They really need to "get their act together" and start innovating fast.
I'm a Win8 and WP8 user, and really like these OSes. But the competition moving so fast that I think MS is not leading, by falling behind in a lot of aspects and business model.
@RubMyDucky I'd like to add that modding has become an amazing tool to enhance the gaming experience in old games. I recently played System Shock 2 with several graphic, texture and sound mods, and it felt like playing a "current-gen" game... almost.
You can see how the mod community has done wonders for games such as Oblivion, Skyrim, STALKER series, Witcher series, Arma series, etc. Only on PC.
If this is true, Microsoft future is in trouble, in my view. I never liked the "this is the end of Microsoft" mentality by all the anti-MS (Apple lovers?) crowed, but Microsoft needs someone to change people's perception about the company. An automobile guy isn't the one to do this. It comes from the mentality of money, shareholders, etc. Microsoft doesn't need that.
Microsoft isn't the old company it used to be, which was amazingly arrogant. Today it seems to be a company that tries to listen to their costumers (at least they try to), and competition made them way more innovative than they used to (they always were, but now they're much more flexible and fast). XBOX, Win 8, WP8, Office, SkyDrive, IE, Azure, etc. are great services, but a lot of people won't try them because it's Microsoft. And that's a shame.
@Thanatos2k I love Steam and I stopped purchasing EA published games a while back. But I must admit that this is great for costumers, and dare I say EA might be changing its ways.
Hope Valve listens. It needs to do something similar.
