A guy meet this problem, he says that:

My control panel display did not have an option for 1440X900 when I first used the monitor. I believe I set a game to that resolution(NR2003) and when I went back to into control panel there was option for 1440x900 available at that time. Not sure why, but it was there. I did not download a single driver. If that helps any1 out great. I don't know why it did it.

http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/201464-28-1440x900-setting-option If it is not helpful, you may find monitor driver, repair OS, unstall VGA driver then re-install in safe mode.

Im a programmer so i can say that it is not too hard to write game runs 100% CPU usage. It doesnt mean 100% potential. Developers need experience on atleast 2 to 3 games to tap near full power of machine.

Is it just for higher resolutions or for overall performance. I'll be running at 1280x1024 and planning on getting a Nvidia card.

1GB is for resolutions 1920x1200 and higher. 512MB will do for your resolution.

Do u know PS3 render 1080p with 256MB? Almost of memory spent for texture, polygon, effect.

I estimate that enable Vsyn make fps down 30%. It means fps is around 50-60 fps on your monitor, not too low for 60Hz.
