I Did Something I Don't Normally Do...

I bought a game. A console game. I have my brother's PS3 since he doesn't play it anymore and I wanted to give PS All-Stars a go when it first came out. I rented that game.

But yesterday, among all the awesome reviews, I caved and went to my nearest Gamestop and bought Ni no Kuni. It was strange buying a console game. It was strange buying a game. Last game I bought was Black Ops 2 (asked me how long I played that), and before that it was Torchlight 2, which is just too awesome to stop playing.

But a new console game... An offline RPG at that. I tend to lean toward classic RPGs if I want some offline fun. Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, Phantasy Star, series that are tried and true. It feels very awkward to play a current gen offline RPG. I am not sure what to make of it or the game just yet as I didn't have time to dive into it yesterday. I expect great things from this game and hope it becomes an instant classic for me. One of those games I can revist for years to come.

I guess what I am saying is, I am a gamer, who really doesn't buy games, especially console games. I find consoles huge wastes of money when I have a far superior machine in my computer rig that can play the same games at higher quality. But I guess sometimes, you have to look beyond, and realize that every once in a while, an exclusive will come out that will make you eat your words and fork over your 60$.

Guess I'll have a review of the game up once I get into it.

State of Gaming Today... ****

When did gaming take such a horrible turn for the worse? I'm most likely in the minority on this one but when I look at games today, I look at over developed, and overly-easy games that don't really leave an impact. Maybe it is because they are replaced too soon then forgotten.

I am a simple gamer. I recently played thruogh Resident Evil 6, on Leon's and Chris' campaign. I was bored. I then decided to download Resident Evil 2 on my Vita. Best 6$ ever spent. I have gotten 100% more enjoyment out of RE2 then RE6 could ever give me. Why? Because it was simple at its core. Boss fights were simple. Navigating was simple (sort of lol). Inventory was simple.

Gaming needs to go back to these days. Every thing does not need to be overdone and super flashy. It's too much. Give us old school gritty games, that are frustratingly hard, and super satisfying to beat. When I say hard I mean hard! I am talking Contra: Hard Corps (Genesis) hard, Friday the 13th (might be a bad game but that **** wasn't easy!) hard, Battletaods hard. Speaking of Battletoads, we need another one of those games!

I don't want to slap i na game and beat it in one damn sitting. I want to have to come back to it a few times because I am stuck on a level that only Satan could have constructed! Yes yes yes, I understand some indie games like Super Meat Boy might fill my simple yet stupid hard (but awesome and fun) desires, and it does. When I feel like getting madder then hell and want to punch a wall because I died in the same spot 50 times I play Super Meat Boy. While the game delivers on a fresh platform, where the games of our past that have evolved into junk?

Again I will bring up Resident Evil because it is the easiest choice. Where Resident Evil 1 and 2 were both scary and fun (and 1 can be kind of hard, those damn Hunters are so friggin unpredicatable!) Resident Evil 5 and 6 were blah... Where Resident Evil: Code Veronica was a friggin masterpiece and hands down the best Resident Evil game ever, RE4 was just a big pile of "WTF". Grant it, RE4 is worlds better then 5 and 6, but it doesn't capture the charm of the previous games. Maybe one day game companies will understand that sometimes, less really is more.

My Poor Vita Gets No Love...

It's no secret that I was an early adopter of the Vita, and instantly fell in love with it. The device is amazing, plain and simple and that can be read in my previous blog posts.

I bought the Vita to game on the go. Rayman, FIFA, and MGS:HD are all I have bought thus far. Since Feb 12th, I have bought 3 Vita games... That is very sad. This is why the system is failing. Yes, there is a ton of games around the corner that I will be buying but I want something new right now. The lack of games is killing me!

With Sony All Stars Battle Royale, CoD: Black Ops, and a few other choice games comign out for the Vita, it has a bright future, but its present couldn't be darker. C'mon Sony, it is time to step it up and start releasing a steady stream of good games for this great device!

Diablo III Servers= LOL!!!!!

I can hear the screams of anger everywhere I go. Fans desperately trying to access the D3 servers. Loyal clickers who took off work and school to play on launch day, only to be shafted by the long hard phallus shaped appendage of Blizzard.

"It's a huge game, of course it will have server issues."

I don't want to hear that! Blizzard has done this enough times by now that they should know how to prepare for a major launch. So much for that "40 second log-in delay" working for them.

I have a lot of friends who bought the game at midnight, only to be riddled with Error 37's. Many of those same friends took off work just to play a video game (God I haven't done that in a very long time). But for what? A few hours of gaming before the servers went down again...then came back up...then went back down. Even as I type this I do not know the status of the D3 servers. This is unacceptable, and this is coming from someone who doesn't even own the game.

I want to like the game, I want to give it a chance, I want to fall in love with clicking all over again. I want to eat my words from my previous blog post, but how can I? How can I put my trust into Blizzard one more time and give them my money when they won't give me a stable server? Screw it I will play offline...Oh yea, DRM. FFFFUUU!

Maybe I will cave at some point in the near future mainly because as SW:TOR grows stale for me, and I eagerly await the open beta and following launch of Phantasy Star Online 2, I have nothing else to play while sitting at home. I have been watching live D3 streams (you know when the servers ARE actually up) and it seems a lot better then it was during beta. graphics looks better and darker, and way more smooth. The leveling system still pisses me off but whatever. I do have a Hulk like craving to smash things... even if it is with a non-javaZon character. I will continue to monitor the game and see where it goes. Once the servers become stable maybe I'll impulse buy it and then will have no other choice but to play.

Who Is Excited for DIABLO III? Not Me...

/gasp I know!

For the record, let's get a few things straight first before I touch on D3.

-I HATE Blizzard with a flaming passion.

-I have never and will never play WoW

- I played D1 and D2 religiously

Glad we got that out of the way. I can remembers the days of my youth. Clicking away, and breaking mice from, um, yea too much clicking! But how it was worth. How excited I would get when I heard that familiar "ding" sound in D2 when a ring would drop, hoping it was a gold color. Oh GOD IT'S GOLD!!!! Hurry and get to it before the other vultures in my game see it. Muhahahaha, fortune smiles upon me for the gold ring is mine. This has to be the elusive Stone of... Manald Heal... FFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!

The good ole days I will tell you. And I am going way back in D2 time, back to 1.07 and before. Back when the GF, WF, and AV were supreme. Back when if you a set of Titan's Revenge and a well built Javazon, all COWS feared you.

With Diablo 3 coming out tomorrow, you would think I would be all giggles and sunshine. Well I do giggle, at how laughably bad this game is. They took a working formula that was D2, and smeared cow dung all over it. No more stat points?!?!?!?! Stupid skill trees, and old classes in new skins?? I would have preferred old classes in updated skins. The fact is, after playing the beta, I felt like I was playing a watered down version of D2. That's not what fans deserve after so many years of loyal clicking!

Will this game sell? Must I even answer this question???? This game is going to blow away everything out right now, just simply because it is named DIABLO III. The gameplay and mechanics don't mean squat no matter how they are to the fans. They just want to go back and relive what they fell in love with 10+ years ago even if they have to force themselves to like an obviously poor and shallow sequel. Can patches fix the issues that will plague this game from launch? Of course. Will they? Well that is 50/50 in my opinion.

Blizzard, my sworn enemy. You stand for everything that is wrong and evil and this world, but I would be willing to put my hatred aside and give you 60$ from my pocket if you could somehow muster the strength to make this game half way playable with future patches... AND I WANT MY JAVAZON BACK!

Welcome Home Peyton Manning!

I am born and raised in NJ, 10 minutes away from Giant's Stadium. Still live here, haven't moved actually. I grew up in house full of Giant's fans, but I also grew up in one of the best times for football: The John Elway Era. Being a kid and watching him play was just magic. I still remember the first game I went to, during the 1998 season, it was a great game, despite the Broncos giving up their first loss to the Giants that year, but they still won the Super Bowl. Watching Elway throw the ball turned me into a life long Broncos fan. Those were the days of my youth.

Since Elway, Denver has trudged along going from QB to QB: Brian Griese, Jake Plummer, Jay Cutler, Kyle Orton, and most recently Tim Tebow. Out of all these QBs I have only liked one: Jake Plummer. 2 10-6 seasons and a 13-3 season with a perfect 8-0 home record in 2005. Plummer was the man. They couldn't catch a break and get into the Super Bowl those years though, but it was still a great time to be a Broncos fan. Those days were over.

Jay Cutler came in and was just a mess. A great game one week, and a BS game the next. I was glad to get rid of him for Kyle Orton. Desite losing Orton last season, I always felt if they gave him more time he could have been great, but they just had to give Tebow his shot. Yea it was great seeing my team in playoffs again finally, but at what cost? Tebow is a joke, and has nothing I want (except for the fact that he is not a wuss and will take a hit like champ) in a QB. Tebow Time is officialy over.

Peyton Manning has found his way over to Denver, and while an open stadium covered in snow might not be his thing, he sure as hell will make it his thing because, that is what a 4 time MVP QB does! Peyton Manning throwing the ball while Elway rubs his hands together with an evil smirk on his face from the sidelines... it's like some legion of doom football style.

The haters are already emerging, and be it hate, fear, or jealousy, I don't care. They can all go bugger off as Denver fans across the states rejoice. It has been far too long since we had hope for a future, and a possible Super Bowl appearance. Manning is the answer the Broncos have been looking for...

"But wait a minutes, Denver doesn't have an offense!"

Oh how blind you are. When you don't have a QB to showcase your talent, your talent looks talentless. Eric Decker, D. Thomas, and Goodwin. 3 WRs capable of making serious plays, nothing to look away from I assure you. Hopefully they can pick up one more big name WR and a TE to give Peyton some more targets.

"You don't have a running game!"

ORLY? Willis Mcghaee was the 2nd string RB last season and he ran 1,200 yards. This is same Mcghaee who didn't do squat on Buffalo and whatever other teams he was on (Ravens I think). When he is healthy he is a beast. It also helps that the Denver Offensive line can put anyone behind it create a 1,000 yard RB.

"Defense wins games though."

Your point??? Von Miller, Elvis "Welcome to" Dummervile, Joe Mays, Champ Bailey. I think we have the defense cover. NEXT!

"Ummm, special teams?"

Matt Prater anyone?

• A fifth-year kicker who ranks second in franchise history in field goal accuracy, having converted 90-of-112 (.804) field goal attempts in his four-plus seasons with the Broncos.
• His field goal percentage from 50+ yards (.750/ 12-of-16) is the best in NFL history among players who started their career after 1970 (min. 10 att.).

Give it up haters! Denver is loading up and coming out all guns blazing this season.

The Vita: The Future of Handheld Gaming!

Wow is this device fantastic. Despite the horrible startup process, and poor battery life, the flaws in this device are few and fer between. The UI can easily confused and bother most users but after spending an hour or 2 with it you quickly get used to it and shrug it off. Navigating is very streamlined otherwise and the Vita is very snappy. The touchscreen is beautiful and responsive as is the backpanel. The dual joysticks are sturdy and handle platform games like Rayman Originslike a champ, while the back panel controls for FIFAjust feel so right. Minimizing a game to look up something on the browser, or to chat with someone couldn't be easier.

My biggest gripe with this device is the USB charging. Why does it have to be over complicated or just plain not work. Why can't I just plug my Vita into a USB and have it charge? This is something I hope Sony addresses in later firmware updates because it is frustrating. Until they fix this, you will be forced to have a car AC charger or a wall charger with you at all times, as you are only getting 4 hours of game time at best o na single charge.

The Vita also has its own phone number which I have read lets it get and send texts. I sent my Vita a text but I never got it. I'll have to dig around a bit to see why but I hope to figure it out soon. I'd much rather text my friends on that rather then my iPhone.

I have not even tried to use the cameras or voice chatting options yet but I will soon. I am a fan of the new game format: Big memory card as I like to call it. Makes it easier to cary rather then a bunch of UMDs. I was very skeptical when the Vita got released and had all its harsh reviews in Japan. It was polished up a bit it seems before hitting stateside and I think it is going to do just fine against the 3DS.

I don't think this system is for everyone just yet because of the price, but give it some time, and once the price is dropped a bit, I think the sales will skyrocket. But for anyone with disposible income, and who is kind of on the fence about buying, if there is one game out right now you want, I say go for it. I don't believe you will be let down.

MMO Wars... What Do You Want?

With every new MMO game released, most claim they will take the title of "Top MMO" from World of Warcraft. All have failed, and all you ever hear about these new MMOs are "Just another WoW" clone. Well what do you expect? There are only so many things you can add to these games to make them fresh and new.

My MMO gaming history is limited to countless betas, Final Fantasy XI from when it was released up until about 2 years ago and Rift for about 6-9 months. While I have Final Fantasy XIV and desperately tried to play it for long periods of time, it just couldn't be done, despite being the best lookign MMO I have ever played. I have played WoW or GW. Shadowbane and Lineage 2 didn't hold my attention very long (L2 had too many problems for me), EQ never interested me, Conan was different, but I couldn't leave FFXI for it.

Rift was a filler game for me until The old Republic came out, which I had been looking forward too since it was announced. Rift was a great game, but the style of play was alien to me, being used to FF XI formula for so long. For anyone not familiar with FF XI, it plays very different then modern MMOs. Rift was a good stepping stone to get me ready for TOR.

Now, as a heavy TOR player, I couldn't be happier. As a MMO fan and Star Wars fan it has what I want. I expected it to be more dominant, but bugs and problems are holding it back. I want it so bad to claim the that Top MMO title, but it seems that time has passed. With the launches of Guild Wars 2 and TERA around the corner, the MMO market is getting massive, and these high profile games are popping up every few months. WoW will continue to be top dog for now, but people need to realize that all future MMOs will take from WoW, but they also need to realize that WoW had plenty of influences too.

Being An Early Adopter... Early Vita Impressions.

Being an early adopter can be a dangerous road to travel. I have been burned before (Damn you NEO GEO Pocket!). Yes I sought out a NGP when it got released, and despite its failure I loved it. I was also an Early adopter of the Dreamcast, which to date is still my favorite console ever. That didn't burn me since I got my money out of that system, it even survived a flood and still works great.

I waited on getting a PSP, all the way until the 3001 series was released. I was kicking myself in the ass for it after though because I had been missing out on a wonderful handheld experience. I was an early adopter for the iPhone 3GS, 4, and 4S. The 3GS was the best phone I had ever used, the 4 laughed at the 3GS in terms of EVERYTHING and further blew me away making me extra happy to be an early adopter. The 4S however, reminded me of the horrors that come along with being an EA. While faster, with lots of nice features, the 4S noms on my battery at all times (thankfullly I am never far from a USB port).

So I decided to throw caution to the wind and buy a 3G/WiFI Vita today. My initial impression: It is pretty, feels wonderful, very responsive (so far) but why does it take forever to set the damn thing up?

At my job, we don't have wifi since everything runs of LAN, so I couldn't use a wifi connection to set up my Vita. My iPhone 4S doesn't have hotspot capabilities because I refuse to pay extra ontop of my "unlimited" data plan for it. Upon starting the device you seem to have restricted 3G access to the "Dataconnect Pass" website to set up a real 3G connection. Except that it lags horribly and pretty much renders it imopssible to complete the sign up process before timing out. So my initial impressions are WTF! I would have loved to have spent my work day playing FIFA and drooling over my new piece of fancy technology but the startup process for the device has been over complicated.

While I could probably simply choose "NO" to the "Link a PSN account to your Vita" question to gain access to everything, I'd much rather just get that out of the way before moving forward. I will be home in an hour and plan on getting some 1 on 1 time with the device for most of the night. I am impressed with how much technology they stuffed in this thing. It feels very sturdy the buttons feel amazing and very resopnsive, the joysticks are firm and feel appropriate, the weight, while heavy doesn't bother me like it bothers other people. A heavier device means a more sturdy device in my opinion.

The overall look of the device is sleek and fantastic, and the screen is nothing short of goregeous. I don't plan on letting this "start up" process hinder my overall opinion on what could very well be a powerhouse of a handheld. Yes it is annoying but I come to expect these things. It is sad though thinking back to when I got my iPhone 4S in the mail, and it only took me 30 minutes to get everything up and running on it from my iPhone 4.

PS Vita... What the Hell I'll Give It a Shot!

As a PC gamer, I am kind of limited to what I can play, but I am all about the mouse and keyboard over a controller, and hate being locked down on my hardware. I haven't bought a console since PS2 and DC, and as far as handhelds go, I never got passed GB Color on Nintendo's side, I had and loved my Neo Geo Pocket, and love my PSP 3001 series even more.

Not owning a PS3 is making me miss some awesome games, but maybe owning a Vita can kind of fill that void a little bit. Obviously I can't utilize the Vita 100% withouta PS3, but I can still do what I need to do with it: GAME ON THE GO!

As a PC player I steer towards MMOs (You can find me on Dreshdae Cantina server on SW:TOR daily) and FPS games (I love Call of Duty games), but don't get to enjoy some other game genres I grew up with like platforms and sports games. With the recent reviews of FIFA Soccerand Rayman Origins for PS Vita, I think that says enough about what this system can do so early in its life. With Metal Gear Solid, Silent Hill, and Final Fantasygames on the way, The system has a bright future with plenty to keep me happy. Not too mention I hear they are making a Call of Dutygame for it as well.

The system got off to a rocky start in Japan, but so far its getting great reviews and has been received well here in the states. So I plan on dropping the 300$ on the 3G model and look forward to some next gen handheld gaming! I'll have my initial thoughts on the device after I spend some time with it. Having never even seeing one in person yet, it will be 100% fresh to me, but that also means I am taking a huge gamble. But if it is half as good as the PSP I should be happy.
