Ushering in a new king

When I look at the current generation of gaming, its astounding watching Sony resurrect itself from the ashes of the PS3 fiasco and reclaim its throne from Nintendo through their stalwartness and unrelenting focus. With the Wii U's dismal performance and the Xbox One's tepid reception outside the states, not to mention the PS4 going on record as the fastest selling console in history (which is even more remarkable when you consider its lack of a killer app), Sony has affixed themselves in an unusually strong position not seen since the PS2 era.

Granted that third parties play a large role as far as determining a console's future, one couldn't help but ponder if this would lead to a majority of developers throwing the brunt of their support towards the market leader. Is it possible? Can a console completely dominate and win the lion's share of an install base at the expense of other platforms?

Over a generation ago, the PS2 established itself as the best selling home console ever made, which at this point in time and counting, sits at 155 million units worldwide. Contrast that to the Gamecube's 22.74 million and the Xbox's 24 million and that figure is staggering. In spite of its notoriously difficult to program for architecture and relatively weak specs, myriads of developers and publishers pledged their support behind the console, fostering loads of platform exclusives on the basis of its robust sales and Sony's laissez faire-esque attitude towards game development.

When you take into account the sheer multitude of factors that play into Sony's favor - powerful hardware, robust development tools, a solid online infrastructure, the strength of the PlayStation brand, the overwhelmingly positive reception surrounding their console, the enormous wealth of third party/indie support, several high profile IPs, the promise of lots of exciting content, not to mention that they command some of the very best in-house talent in the industry - Naughty Dog, Quantic Dream, Media Molecule, Insomniac, Level 5, Team Ico, Sony Bend, Sony London, Sony Santa Monica, Sucker Punch, ThatGameCompany, Ready at Dawn, Guerrilla Games, and Polyphony Digital, one can't help but foretell a likelihood of the PS4 thrusting itself towards total market dominance.

Its bound to happen. I can feel it deep in my gut.
