The Music of Gaming

This might cause a huge argument, but I, for one, don't like most of the music in games. Don't get me wrong, driving through the end of The Maw in Halo: Combat Evolved with the volume on max was a LOT of fun; but games now-a-days just don't seem as epic. The way I see it, the gaming music is just plain bland. It's white noise. I'm an avid First-Person Shooter type and an RPG player, and listening to the soundtracks on most are boring. (I have to give credit to the music in Elder Scrolls IV: OblIVion, though.) I have thought about the way the music affects the way I'm playing. If it's hyperactive and happy, then I run around in all gaiety, jumping from building to building or tree to tree. If it's hard and heavy, then I'm blowing my opposition and even my teammates into gibs beneath my feet. When it's got a nice beat, I drive hard and walk cool. When it's an epic soundtrack, I am filled with valor and attempt to do all I can in this world as much as a hero of my caliber can.

I'm a metal head, plain and simple, but even I know when you need hip/hop, techno, orchestration, etc. I usually change my music around as I switch games. When I play WoW, it's going to be some rock and pop (such as Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jonathon Coulton, and Three Days Grace). When I play Doom or Left 4 Dead(alone), it'll be Metallica, Bury Your Dead, Bullet For my Valentine, Slayer, and the Duskfall. As I boot up my RPG's such as Fallout 3, Elder Scrolls IV (I've grown bored of the music, by now), Fable, or even Zelda, I put on orchestration such as Beethoven and Handel.

I'm not just saying that a specific genre should be used for specific games. Oh, no! I think that if game designers really worked on the music, it could be much better. In the Halo games, for example, there are moments of stealth, moments of small skirmishes, moments of epic battles, and moments of butt-clenching fear. They should adapt the music a bit better for its environment and actually make better music. A small amount of Tick-Tack with the drums and a chord or two on a guitar does NOT make metal. If I was faced down by monstrous enemies that require some serious butt-kicking in a small amount of time, I'd go for quick double-bass drums with some lightning shredding.

I know that I've repeated myself a lot while writing this, but I just got out of bed and, on a whim, just started writing something. Oh, and one more thing: Snoop Dogg on Guitar Hero? Come on, man!

My Twisted Life as a Strange Person

I shall bestow greetings unto you, collected masses who somehow found themselves navigated to this page by accident. This is my first..."blog"... I don't really want to call it that. Let's just call this my Public Journal for the sake of me not committing myself to an institution. I'll start off by talking about my favorite hobby. I'll give you a few hours to guess. Go ahead. Turn off the monitor and go take a nap. If you haven't made love in a while, go out and do so.

Back? Good, now we can begin. Have you guessed it, yet? Here it is: Playing Video Games. I've done it since I was a baby ( playing Zelda and Dragon Warrior, etc). My favorite games are usually violent/scary action shooters. I especially like the Doom series. Most people consider themselves Masters of Doom if they beat the game. I beat it...several times...on Ultra-Violence. I know what I'm doing. I also like MMORPG's and RPG's. I used to play World of Warcraft a lot. Anyway, the RPG's that I like are as follows: FABLE: the Lost Chapters (FTW!!), Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (didn't like Morrowind, way too slow), Mass Effect, Legend of Zelda games, etc.

FYI, I'm going to unpredictably change subjects like this occasionally. I listen to Mushroomhead, Metallica, Slipknot, The Duskfall, Disturbed, some Dragonforce, some Zebrahead, some System of a Down, some Mindless Self Indulgence, Voltaire, old Powerman 5000, Rammstein, Rob Zombie, Insane Clown Posse, Flogging Molly, etc, etc ad infinitum. There's quite the variety of stuff that I'll listen to. I enjoy playing on my Xbox 360 and watching stuff on youtube. I LOVE to do Drama at my school. As of this moment, I am Editor Webb in the play Our Town, being produced at my school. I'll update this later, if I feel like it. I probably won't update it, though.:P
