I have no idea what's causing those problems, but I highly doubt it is 64-bit problem or OS problem. Have you tried reinstalling the game, perhaps you made changes to the game's files or have any mods installed?
The hinge on my DS Lite broke off completely (where the power/wifi lights are) so I bought a new shell off eBay (You can get screens off eBay also) and fixed it myself. It wasn't that hard. I used this guide: Reparing a Nintendo DS Lite It walks you through the whole process step by step. Steps 4 and 5 are about the top half and the top screen (Thought you have to start with the bottom and remove everything, not just the top part). Oh and be sure you get the tri wing screw driver. Then again, if you are not all that tech savvy don't do it... and you need a good bit of patience.
I don't think they could remove the sensor bar. It seems that you need to point at the middle of the screen to "center" the controller and it uses that position to determine how you move the remote and how far.
