Yes its something 3 dimensional that can be felt...which is something not even pc has..it use shades and textures and bumpmaping "i believe" to create a "textured" look..Which is something any hardware can do..

VanDammFan

Well , Pc games used texture mapping techniques even on the early 90s ( on games like Wolfstein 3D , Doom , Wing Commander 3 , Ultima Underworld , Descent etc ). Consoles followed with several games on 3DO , Saturn and PS1. We refer always to the several Texture Mapping techniques which are available all these years ( from the early years until now ) , when we say the word " texture" .

Ahaa that has not been released yet :P. However on a more serious note; project cars looks awesome. It looks like its running off the grid engine? but obviously tweaked a fair bit :P Those old f1 cars (if I am right) look insaine fun. Hopefully I'll have my new graphic/s card when it comes out :D.

Project cars uses a modified version of the engine , used for nfs Shift ! Compared to the older version , it will be capable for some more things ( like weather ) !

yes, you're not a graphics expert.iKILLnerds

Well maybe , but then if you know better , can you elaborate please where I am wrong , and why these images I posted have only shaders and no textures at all?

i love the GoW games but i don't see any surface texture at all, just flatness with good colors and shading.iKILLnerds

I am not a graphics expert ( so this is my opinion ) , but I don't think that the 3D objects ( including the characters ) and surfaces , would look like these in the images I posted , if they had applied to them only some shading techniques !

From the wikipedia article about shading ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shading ) :

" In computer graphics, Shading refers to the process of altering the color of an object/surface/polygon in the 3D scene, based on its angle to lights and its distance from lights to create a photorealistic effect. Shading is performed during the rendering process."

Again , I'm not a graphics expert , but it seems shading is just some techniques , used to alter the colors of faces in a 3D model based on the angle of the surface to a light source or light sources ( bolded part is from the wikipedia article too ) . So If the 3D objects and surfaces I posted , had only shading applied to them , they would look just some empty 3D polygons architecture . It seems they just use a good mix of textures and shading techniques.

there's no textures on anything. just shading.elessarGObonzo

Actually GOW 3 doesn't use only shaders, and in my honest opinion, they have done a very descent work on textures.

An example:

This photo has been taken by a Neogaf user, directly from the game , by using a capture card . It is a screenshot directly from gameplay, not from a cutsceene.
(It's from the part of the game, between the first and the second part of the final boss battle.)
Here's the link of the thread it appears: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=390185&page=6 (it appears on pages 6 & 7).

EDIT: 2nd example , from a different user , on the same thread, (again by using a capture card) . It's from page 8 of that thread:

Who cares what is fair? What is this "fair" notion you guys speak of? Unless you mean it's morally wrong or something LOL

You have 2 games, you compare them with the best possible experience you can get on each one, any other comparison is irrelevant. What next? We start comparing PC vs console versions of multiplats with PC on Low at 720p to make it fair?

Like I said, unless you're trying to determine what developer is most talented, you don't use vanilla versions in comparisons, that's just pointless.

nunovlopes

One question here : from which year are the mods , the OP have used for Doom 3 in this thread?

My mistake, So Forza looks better than PS2, but not any better than a car designed for use in both a PSP game and PS3. So you admit that PSP looks just as good as Forza during a race?CorbraMax

Of course not, because the Veyron PSP uses is much less detailed than it's GT5 counterpart. ( when car models transfered on PSP (PS2 models and custom-made ones like the Veyron), during GT PSP creation , they all took a hit on their polygon count and texture detail , in order to fit on the small size of PSP's UMD). Don't forget also that the GT5's Veyron benefits from GT5's lighting model and shaders. What I was truing to say, is that GT5's Veyron is not a last-gen asset at all.

The majority of current gen racers have detailed cockpits. Ridge Racer 6 and 7... Even though they are current gen games... Had cars with last gen design.

Forza 2 had cars with last gen designs.

I Agree with this. I mean "not a last-gen asset" in terms of exterior model polygon count ( something that doesn't applies to many other standards ).

And to be honest personally, I was very pissed that the Veyron ( and many other great cars) , didn't receive the premium treatment and a proper cockpit view.
And yet the GT5 Standard looks just as good as the Forza car. I guess Forza is just a low res PS2 game!!!Nuck81

The Bugatti Veyron that GT5 uses, is not a PS2 car model at all ( unlike almost all other standard cars ).

The Veyron and the Mazda Furai, was developed for the PSP, when gt5 was already in development. I consider these two cars as "semi-premiums" quality-wise because their models use a higher poly count than their PSP counterparts ( and most other standard cars ) , because they created to be used as assets for GT5 too. So they are far more detailed than most other standard cars.

My mistake, So Forza looks better than PS2, but not any better than a car designed for use in both a PSP game and PS3. So you admit that PSP looks just as good as Forza during a race?
