They were talking about a platinum account coming about a year and a half ago but it never happened. However one of the good features that was rumored was a 5GB online storage for save games, i don't think this is worth $100 a year, but i would love that extra back up of my saves, I've lost a few game saves over the years and never been bothered to go back and play that game again (Lips being the main one for this, that game loved to piss me off at every chance it got).
