I think the reason is that, they don't make the games as good as possible anymore, just so they can keep making sequels. The biggest example would be Mario Kart Double Dash. Its a GCN game, yet the DS version has twice as many tracks.
If you have Wi-Fi, you won't need both games, you can trade online through it, and also battle.

They introduced "abilities" in the ruby/saph gen. Abilities give your Pokemon certain bonuses and attributes. I.E. increasing speed while on rain dance/sunny day, being immune to stuff, etc.
And now in this gen, they made the special/physical split. Attacks used to be special or physical depending on the type (All fire attacks special and all poison attacks physical) but that's no longer the case. Now it depends on how the attack affects you and your foe. I.E. Hyper BEAM is now special, despite being normal type, and Thunder PUNCH is physical, despite being electric.
