Modern 3D graphics can create some truly immersive worlds, and take ones breath away while doing so. That being said, I really miss the days of 2D gaming, especially when it comes to platformers. Sonic adventure was pretty good, and the new Sonic games being worked on for the next gen consoles look amazing, BUT SOMETIMES I JUST WANT TO PLAY A 2D SIDESCROLLER, and with todays hardware, it is possible to make some games with rich, beautiful 2D artwork. Unfortunately everyone considers 2D "low-tech" and avoid it at all cost. I think that is a huge mistake. There is a certain satisfaction I get from old school sprite-based games that modern polygon meshes just don't deliver, no matter how nicely they are textured.
Perhaps even more than in games, I miss 2D artwork in animated movies. "Finding Nemo" and "Toy Story" are fun to watch, but will never be the masterpiece that movies such as "The Little Mermaid" and "The Lion King" are. I guess those days are just gone.
