New PS3 info

I know nobody reads this blog, no one at all, i don't even know if someone ever saw it (if you do please leave me a little comment) but here's some new info on the PS3:

- Reuters reported that Sony has confirmed a spring 2006 launch date for PlayStation 3, but no territory was specific, so the system may be launched in Japan first. Sony has also denied the online reports about the PS3 launch been pushed back to Q4 2006.

- PSM has reported new tidbits regarding PlayStation 3, based on info provided by anonymous developers.

* There are far more game titles in development for PS3 than originally expected in the US.

* Some developers have already received the final development hardware for PS3 in early January 2006.

* The performance of the PS3 hardware is faster than expected, PS3 also possesses a Digital Video Recording (DVR) function.

* Sony will have a content download service similar to iTunes, but will offer high definition films and music.

* PS3 will have Media Center capabilities similar to Xbox 360, but with more functions.

* Video and audio can be streamed over a home network, Sony is planning for a location free rendition over PSP.

* PSP will be able to exchange data with PS3; it is possible to upload multimedia content from PSP to PS3.

* PS3 will have firmware update capabilities similar to PSP.

* PS3 will have more BluRay functionalities than a regular BluRay Player, because the Cell and RSX processor can perform many more tasks while reading the discs.

* PS3 will launch in US in Autumn 2006, certain game titles will have online functions at launch.

FIghting Games

Since my first try at Mortal Kombat back in the days of the SNES, I feel in love with that genre of game. The big problem with that genre tho is that it's always the same. The four basic moves (high punch, low punch, high kick, low kick - block) are still the only things you do in a fighting game.

The developpers have dumped realism for quicker and gorier action. As it may draw inexperienced and new players, this type of gameplay ain't really for veterans like me. I started doing karate at the age of 8 (soon gonna be black belt, saturday december 8th, wish me good luck!!!), influenced by those video games and Jackie Chan movies. I quickly discovered that real martial arts are way harder then what they seem when you give those super high jumped kick by clicking two buttons.

The problem is that basicly any newbie can pick up a combo list from teh net and practice them and become pretty good. Unlike in real life, no tactics are put into use when fighting, you can simply button mash and sometimes, it does the trick. The combo system might give a head start for people that have been playing games for a while, but it doesn't necessarly give you some satisfaction, at least, not for me.

When will a game opt for simulation rather then quick button mashing action?

Well i'll tell you when, soon. I'm telling you this in the open for all of you that read my blog right now, I wrotte a video game script, a fighting game that is meant to be a simulation of real fighting. Fighting isn't all about striking first, but attacking smart. Be on the lookout for Kumite!!!

I might drop more info later.

My Freeplay

I post this from another forum where i started a Freeplay-like thread. Here's the post before me:

" Now, if we all pointed our fingers at the wounded warrior of Mao, that wouldn't be fair - he is just misunderstood. Without him, it would be the end, and I'm sure no one wants to see that. But there are other things we need beyond hostility - a little love, a little peace, friendships and working together. "

And here's my post:

Missunderstandings happens to us all, but more particularly, the people in entertainment. Most actors' words are bashed and transformed into things they never even came nearly close of saying. This problem is very present in the gaming industry.

If a director has the missfortune to tell some information about a video game, gamers all around the world will take his sayings and transform it into something totally unrelated. For example, if "The Sims" director would declare "I had a couple of martinis yesterday" in an interview, gamers everywhere will start claiming that "the director swore on his honor that players will be able to nurse hang overs after long night partying filled with every avaible type of alcohol includin martinis wich will most likely be the most damaging drink."

Remember that phone game you used to play in elementary school, the same principle applies here. Gamers start spreading the words all around the net, claiming their information is true, seeing how they are "some developer's lil brother" and know everything there is to know about this game. The information about some games then become so biased that no one knows if it is actually true or not. Thus starts a rumor.

Most of those rumors are contested or defended by hardcore fans. They feel personnally insulted if anyone claims that "it's impossible that the PS3 runs at 120 FPS." They then flee to sony's rescue and start protecting their beloved platform from microsoft and nintendo fan-boys: "How can you say something like that about the playstation, look at your &$!#$%*@ graphics gamecube, it's not worth **** Nintendo lovers then reply by indicating that they have way more succesfull franchise then Xbox.

The interminable fight then starts everywhere: "No better driving simulation then Grand Turismo", "MASTERCHIEF ROXOR111!!!1111!!1!1!111", "Itsaaaaa meeeee, Maaaaarrrio." People feel connected to their games and platforms, and won't let anyone degrade their images. But what caused those fan bases to be so proeminent. Result of good gameplay, or money thursty gobal marketing?
