[QUOTE="useLOGIC"]get an optical cable and listen to planet earth in 5.1/7.1 surround on ps3.. sounds AWESOME. better than any game IMO.chikenfriedrice
yeah I use optical cables for both consoles....but have not watched planet earth yet :)
Then you guys need your hearing checked.
The PS3 is incapable of transmitting losless condecs (TrueHD or DTS MA) or LPCM over optical. The only way the PS3 can transmit these signals is through HDMI hooked directly to your receiver.
If you are using optical for your PS3, and you select LPCM (I believe all PS3 games with the high quality audi use this rather than True HD or DTSMA, although they are all identical, DTSMA and TrueHD just save space by compressing it, but since they are lossless and not lossy no quality is lost) then you are getting 2.0 STEREO sent to your receiver. Your receiver will matrix the signal and send it out to your speakers as "phonied" 5.1. In other words, this sort of audio would be far worse than the 360's, or even a true lossy 5.1 track (like regular DTS or regular Dolby Digital 5.1, like the stuff 360 games and regular DVD's use.)
PS3 can't pass lossless audio or LPCM over optical. You need to use HDMI to get that audio out of your PS3. Toslink (optical) does not have the bandwidth to pass LPCM, True HD, or DTSMA.
