The author's throwing the word "art" around too much. Whether ME3 is that or not is subject to debate. The issue is something that has to do with science fiction. They have dared lift a hand against one of the pillars of their own universe, and any space SF - faster-than-light travel. In any ending that has become impossible. With this pillar removed, the universe crumbles. Hell, it basically puts an end to the franchise, as the "mass effect" is what makes the relays function, and now that it's gone - well, there goes everything else. There have been precedents. In one of the later seasons of Star Trek TNG, if anyone remembers, the writers, while lamely and obviously trying to push an ecological message, have dared touch FTL, and because the warp engines have been creating holes in space or whatever they limited all ships to warp 5. To say that that was an unpopular move would be an understatement. Space-related SF is primarily about this fantasy of interstellar travel, and undermining it is not a bold move - it's plain stupid. There is a certain amount of metaplot-related logic in it, yes, - it is a sacrifice to end the cycle and destroy anything related to Reapers. But you can't do that. You simply shouldn't. What they could have done to fix it - instead of changing the ending - is assert (or even show) that in the future FTL is rediscovered in some other way. But they haven't thought of that, and that's a big mistake. Rectify that in a sequel... why not.

"Poor, unfortunate Laidlaw. A series that is by definition science fiction has a lead writer who doesn't like Star Wars. Seriously, one in his position can't be intelligent and NOT like the original trilogy." Totally agree. I was surprised. But well, all people have their little quirks... Nice to get to know more about how one of my favorite developers works. Big thanks to Gamespot for the article.
