This thread is a bit off an odd read, because I've never got a console for Christmas - hell, there was never the possibility of getting a console for Christmas.

I remember the game I was most excited to get was a copy of was Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for the Amiga 500; this was to replace a copy that... hmm, I can't actually remember what happened to the original copy we had.

Newegg throwing down the gauntlet, perhaps - maybe some other companies will step up to the plate and offer some discounts.
