Whatever happened to the joys of playing split-screen four player games?

More and more games coming out are only coming with online only multiplayer. This is all well and good, but what if you and a few friends want to just hang out and play eachother? This is becoming more and more rare of an occurence, because of the online only games coming out.

I love online play, don't get me wrong. But sometimes I want to just play on one T.V with 3 or four friends, I don't want to have to go through a game lobby or hook 4 PS3's or XBOX's together or go through the hassle of friend codes.

Online play should stay. It is the future of games. But please developers, don't forget about local parties too. Look at Rock Band. It's popularity comes as a party game, something you can do with family or friends together. Why are more and more new games coming out only coming out with online multiplayer, and no splitscreen multiplayer?

I'm probably in the minority here, but personally I think one of the joys of video games is just getting some people together and having fun with one game on one console. This is getting more difficult than it should.
