Does the wii u game encompass the 3 games that came before it(DS, WII and 3ds), in terms of gameplay elements?
They are ALL one in the same. Nothing remotely significant stands out about either of them. It's the same pathetically rehashed and remedial platforming game play, audio with different instruments, and archaic "Your princess is in another castle!" Mario game "story". This is THE series of games that defines getting milked more than a cow's udders.
So if I was just to play the Wii U version I wouldn't be missing out on anything?
The Wii U version is the definitive version, however. It basically takes the extremely minimal progression, if any, from the other NSMB games and wraps it up into the most visually impressive NSMB game with HD paint. So, yes; if you're to "invest" in a NSMB game, the Wii U one is the one to get.
They all still suffer from the same old Mario clichés anyway - from whoring the Super Leaf/Tanooki Suit, to the usual classic Mario game nods here and there. Basically, don't expect anything to truly be "new". As for missing out on anything with the Wii U version, you're not. It's basically a play-by-play summation of the same remixed and stale formula you would find in the other NSMB games.
