I don't consider myself a "hardcore" gamer. I love to play games, I have had at one time or another just about every console (except N64). I have finished just about every game I have bought. Which makes me wonder about some of my fellow gamers. If you put the money towards a system, controllers, memory cards and games why do you even bother if you do not have the patience to finish any one game?
When I recieved my very first (personal) system (sega master system) I made my mom buy me Phantasy Star, at the time it was 69.99! i saw the commercial one time and wanted it. Once I recieved it I played numerous hours on that game. It was winter time and what else did I have to do. Friends would come over and play it, but they really wanted to play my other games. The whole stop, fight, stop fight, thing was not for them.
Fast forward in time, now we all know people who just dont like turn-based Rpg's. Thats fine can't please everyone. I started to notice other genres of games getting the lack of patience treatment. Resident Evil was another game that people just seemed not to have any patience for. My friends would buy the game (shooting zombies was something they wanted to do), but once the IMO simple puzzle elements would come up they get annoyed or when they figured out that they had to be a little more careful with there ammo they get frustrated and not play!
I myself am not a "fan" of guides to games I paid my hard earned money and I personally want a challenge. I dont see the sense in paying money for a game and then having a guide to reduce your purchase to nothing basically. Now I have used gamefaq, (FF7 the safe combo to get Odin and to get Tifas Final Limit break or how to get a Calc in FFT).
Since when is a game not liked because its a challenge? I find this wierd. Wouldn't you feel ripped-off if a game you bought was so easy you finished in a day or two. Its one thing to be skilled at a certain type of game its another where anybody can finish the game in record time.
I myself run to games that are difficult or I choose the most difficult way to progress through a game. First time through PSO I was the magic user class which is the most difficult route to take in PSO first time through. I have purchased Dead to Rights and Ninja Gaiden because of the difficulty the games.
My observations on this topic have lead me to this conclusion I hope that developers do not "dumb" down games for the "please dont make me think" masses out there. I want my fifty bucks worth it thank you very much. Role playing games with less than 25 hours gametime make me pause. One of the reason I havent until this year bought a sport game is because I was tired of the 77-10 scores I would put up. It's also the reason I am in dire need of a side scrolling shooter! (PLEASE ANYONE) I need to sweat and curse at the screen while I get my behind handed to me time and time again...LOL!
There is no need to "water" things down for the masses just to sell games, you could always make a guide for the "casual" gamer and make even more money. Which I hope is used to further frustrate me and my fellow gamers like me.
Now I will go back to having my a** handed to me by the black garbed ninjas in the alley in NG!:D
