I think the article struck on something important. People do use games to escape, and "sink deeply into the game world", but for the majority of players, it's not problematic. For the minority who are dependent, games become a symptom and aggravator of deeper psychological problems. But for finding escape, I'm not convinced that games are that different from films, music, the internet - even books. The present hysteria around games is comparable to the hysteria around novels when they were new: blamed as time wasting brain-drains for the youth of today. To get somewhere like shooting your parents, you need issues to start with. I've noticed myself getting grumpy after gaming - it's hard to have self control!!
