If someone is threatening you with deadly force, at least in my state, you're not obligated to run away. You can stand and fight back. A fistfight can very easily turn deadly; it's really not that hard to kill another human being by punching them in the face--you knock them out, they fall back, slam their head on the pavement, and boom, they're dead. If someone attacks me, I am not obligated to only fight back in accordance with what they're using (in this instance, a person attacks with the fists, and I am free to use a knife or gun--I don't have to fight back with only my fists). But like I said, I don't start fights.
Did you assume that in the US, if someone jumps you on the street for instance, you're only allowed to defend yourself with your body and not a gun/knife? That's not how it works. As long as you feel your life is in danger, you can fight back as you will, though most people would be stupid as **** to try to take on a guy with a gun/knife.
