A word of warning: There may be substantial amounts of Freeman-praising involved in this blog.
As one can see, Gordon Freeman has emerged the victor of the All-Time Greatest Game Hero's poll. I know some people may not exactly agree with the results, though. But nonetheless, I'm happy that Freeman pulled through - I feel it's about time he got some kind of recognition in a contest. So, I would like to say "Congratulations!" to Freeman (relax, I know he isn't real), as well as to Blakenthal for being #1 on the leaderboard.
I will admit, I never would've thought Freeman was going to make it this far. I was assuming he would've been one of many favorites who would get knocked out in the early rounds. But, he made it thanks to the fans! His neck-in-neck battle against Snake was extremely intense. I honestly thought he was going to be done in, considering how many MGS fans there are out there. Yet, Freeman pulled through, barely.
Now, I thought Freeman was toast when he got to Link. Again, that was a 50-50 battle for quite a while. However, Valve stepped in and encouraged their Steam users and fans to vote for Gordon. On the forums, people referred to this as Valve unleashing the "Steamroller" upon the contest. With the held of all Steam users, Freeman surged above Link and won. That brought nothing else but a huge smile to my face to see Freeman, one of my favorites, actually win against Link. Don't get me wrong, I ****ing love Zelda games though.
Then this past week, Freeman put a hurting on Mario, to the point where Mario didn't even stand a chance. I was seriously NOT expecting that. I figured Gordon had it good on Snake and Link, but thought he was a goner when it came to Mario, one of the biggest icons in gaming history. Yet, I was (much to my happiness) proven wrong, as Gordon maintained an ever-growing strong lead 'til the end.
I guess long story short, I shouldn't have doubted in Freeman. He and his trusty crowbar (and the fans, of course) pulled through and won.
So, all in all, I think this contest was very good, even though we saw a LOT of chaos arise with the unexpected surge in voters for Bub & Bob against Master Chief and Sonic. Call me crazy, but aside from the constant stream of nuisance, I actually enjoyed the chaos that was being created. While it was rather short-lived, it definitely shook the contest up, and added a whole new level of uncertainty. In part, it made things a LOT more interesting than if it had not happened.
Hopefully, we will see another kind of contest in the future. I've seen people speculating at the possibility of a Greatest Game Villain contest. If such a contest does happen, you can definitely count on me supporting Kefka.
At this time, I would like to give thanks to GameSpot for hosting the contest, to Valve, Steam users, and Freeman fans alike for voting and making Freeman's victory possible, to Nintendo fans for keeping up a good fight (better luck next time, guys), and to the YouTube user Robbaz, for making the absolutely-hilarious Steamroller video.
That is all for me. Congrats again, Freeman.
