The people did it to THEMSELVES in Bioshock, they were not forced to alter their DNA. In my opinion that is a horrid example. It's communism versus free choice.
I agree with Blue Timber, it also sends a message of morality. You're altering your body in the way these people did. What keeps you from losing all of your humanity during the game? When infact, each time you use one of the gene altering devices you become less human and more like your enemy. And I think that is VERY deep.
