Some of the points you make, Peter, are valid (system memory and Wii-to-Wii U transfering, for example) but others are just cynical garbage. Calling capacitive panels "universally preferred" to resistive panels can be proven incorrect by this post alone, because I do NOT prefer smartphone-style touch screens at all, and I'm glad Nintendo chose to include a stylus and implement a stylus-centric touch screen on the Wii U gamepad. Touch screens that rely on finger-and-thumb inputs are clumsy and imprecise. Further, I don't know if you noticed, but NO ONE is buying the Basic Set; it's obvious that it was designed to make people think "look at how much more you get with the Deluxe Set for just $50 more." When the Xbox 360 launched, pretty much everyone accepted that the entry-level "Core" system was useless, and that you needed to invest in the 20gb system if you wanted to get the most out of the experience. It's no different with the Basic & Deluxe SKUs of the Wii U. I'm quite happy with my Wii U so far (both the console, and the gamepad) so speak for yourself.
Awesome news! I love Plants vs. Zombies. The announcement came directly from PopCap, so I sure hope they've remained autonomous since being acquired by EA.
