So I bought Halo 3 and have been playing online. It's plenty fun I guess - though highly derivative of Quake 3. However, one thing I miss from Quake and Unreal is all the gore. Why doesn't the rocket launcher make arms and legs pop off with a mist of blood left behind? Where are the flying heads? I'm disappointed.

RapidMind? Not familar.azuroc
Do a google search, it's an SDK for multicore programming. But I got no further than that. I'm guessing it's an multi-core optimized symbolic debugger and code validator in one. Sort of like gdb+clearcode on steroids.

The lack of easy streaming to a PS3 is an issue for me I'd like to do this. Now I used Linux as my primary operating system from 1994 to 2002 and I could install Linux and start streaming media if I wished, but I would like a nice simple way to do this.guyhunter

Yeah. I wouldn't want to boot linux just to stream music to the PS3. There's got to be a better solution. BTW: I'm also a convert to the Mac after having run Linux since the early nineties. Ran BSD/386 before that. (And before that I ran or supported Venix on a PDP-11, SunOS, Irix, Digital UNIX, blah blah blah at various jobs). It's nice that PPC linux distros were ready for the PS3, especially with Cell dev tools to make use of those SPUs. But the lack of hardware accelerated video really blows. When I boot up, I usually stick to console mode because X11 on the thing is so slow.

BTW: I've also got a 360 too, and it's got a lot of great games going for it. I'll be keeping both systems. Heh. :)

What are your thoughts?Lpsquall
My thoughts are that you would have a point were the Elite 360 incompatible with prior 360 models. But it isn't. It runs all the same games, takes all the same peripherals, and works across XBL exactly the same as before. Also... WTF is this post doing in the PS3 forum? Shouldn't you have posted it over at 360land?

Are you satisfied with your purchase?

How does the online play feel?

How does PS3 fare as a multimedia station?

Can you burn songs to it?

That's all for now, thanks. :3

Viewtiful_Joker

1) Yes.

2) Fine enough. Only tried with Resistance. And, frankly, I didn't much like RFOM. JMO.

3) Excellent. It's rated the best sub-$1000 BD player on the market by AVS Forum regulars. For HD Movies, the PS3 is simply a wonderful device.

4) Haven't tried. Sorry.

Unlike the PS3, the 360 has an internal scaler. So, whether a game is rendered for 1080 or 720 scanlines is much less of an issue for 360 owners. HDMI will have no impact on which resolution devs target.

Thats dead right, MS will take any chance they can to put a strangle hold on any market they can, and this is why its so important the PS3 wins.teebeenz
Wins what? The homecoming at prom night? And what constitutes "winning"? The real question is: Did you buy the right system for your needs? If yes, then be happy and enjoy!

Yeah, but if you wait a year to buy a game, most of them won't have anyone playing the multiplayer anymore.Bladecutter56
Oh come on. I still find plenty of people to play original XBox Doom 3 online (which was never very popular), never mind all those 360 release games (many of which were very good). That said, the most popular games won't drop in price as fast... so you'll still want a few recent releases every now and then.

Games would also cost a whole lot less if you bought a year after initial release. Most of the year-olds sell at around $25-$30 a pop.

Are these reliability issues i hear about almost gone? darrowby88

I don't think so. My first 20GB 360 died within minutes of turning it on (last November). The biggest problem is the case industrial design. It's just very poor at circulating air through the case to cool components. One example of this is the layering of a hard disk right underneath the DVD-ROM. Both components tend to run hot due to fast moving parts. Also note that the 360 has three fans to vent out the back; if one of those dies, your 360 has a problem.

My second 360 has lasted several months, however you'll see plenty of posts by people who've been through several; buy that extended warranty. That said, it's possible the 120GB 360 will have transitioned from a 90nm to 65nm fab process, in which case the CPU and GPU should output considerably less heat. But I didn't notice anything in the press release which stated one way or the other what fab process Xenon/Xenos chip pair will use in this latest offering.
