When I take a look at all of the classic series, I see one thing. The sequels always seem harder. Lets take a look at this.
Super Mario Bros. This is a prime example (well, Mario is a prime series). The first SMB was a pretty tough game. However, it's sequel was so hard that it neverleft Japanesesoil until All-Star package on the SNES. I've played a bit of the Lost Levels, and holy ****it'stough. I recently wrote a review on Silver Sulfer, a game that is hard to a fault. Was SMB 2 hard to a fault? Possibly. That's why we got Doki Doki Panic instead.
Legend of Zelda. Same as SMB, except that the sequel did leave Japan. The first LoZ was pretty tough, but that was mostly due to navigation. It was hard to find your way through that game. Well, AoL was a little easier in navigation since it was a touch more straight forward (though you never did get pointed in any direction), but holy ****, the game was a hundred times tougher. This is will probably the only Zelda game where an Armos Knight can kill you with ease... And there's quite a few of them in the first temple.
Castlevania. The first one wasa classic vampire-killing game. The second was as well... Except it was considerably tougher in some areas. Every while it would go to night, and with your curse, you would be screwed. All the enemies would be tougher, you couldn't visit any shops or anything, and if you die, you lose all of the hearts that you need to buy certain items. Plus there is the fact that some items were ridiculously expensive. Then there is that one wall where you have to do somethign that you probably would almost never guess... The only thing about the game is that the last dungeon and boss is pathetically easy. Though the rest of the game is pretty damn tough.
Back then, develpers would make a hard game, and if it was popular enough, they would make a sequel and it would be even harder. That's the way it was. Nowadays, it's the opposite. Games are getting easier and easier. There are exceptions, and I like those exceptions. Metroid Prime 2 was harder than MP1. Super Mario Sunshine was harder than SM64. MM was harder than OoT. Though nowadays, games are cosndierably getting easier. Where is the difficulty running off to in Zelda? Nowdays, the option of difficulty levels are easy to do... Why don't they do it? It will attract more people. Like in Zelda, there should be an easy, medium, and hard mode. Easy being WW level, hard being almost AoL level... Well, okay the level difference might be a little too much there, but still, they should do it. Same with every other game. It just makes it so much better. I'm hoping in SMG, there will be easy stars to get and hard stars like in SM64, but not to the level of annoyance in Sunshine.
