If you built a budget duo core or triple core PC 3 years ago and you have a decent midrange dx11 two year old GPU, you are probably maxing out or close to maxing out any PC game built today with good frame rates at 1080p. You don't need to go all crazy these days to play a game on the PC. I agree with the notion that PC gaming will be somewhat stuck in the mud until the next-gen consoles come out. Most cross platform PC games are still flashy console ports at the core. BF3 is no exception.
Pretty cool but I'll stick with my single 23" 1080p LED LCD and a single efficient gpu. It's not so much about the money or electricity bill, but the heat would be a deal breaker in my mind. My single overclocked 8800 ultra and 24" LCD I use to have heated up the room so much I couldn't wait to get rid of them. Uncomfortably sweating while playing a game is never fun in my mind.
