I have two examples on how Nintendo's strategie is working and that they are reaching older audiences.
Example #1:
A little while ago, I was fortunate enough to come across Electroplankton at a local EBGames. It's a really "game", but the game itself isn't the best part.
As I do everytime I get a new game, I showed it to my 51 year old Dad. As I was showing him what Electroplankton could do, and he picked it up and started screwing around and having fun in seconds! He loved it!
Example #2:
While I was visiting my Grandma during the Summer of 2005, I picked up Nintendogs. I brought it back to my Grandma's house and showed it to her. She picked it up and started petting the puppy and throwing tennis balls for it. After about 5 minutes, I had to ask for it back! As I retrieved it from her, she said "I want one!". She has since passed away, but if she was still alive today, you can bet she'd have a copy of Nintendogs and her own DS!
