I'm looking for mods over at various Morrowind mod sites and I see one thing in common. Authors tend to like keeping "their" mods to themselves. When someone is making a compilation of mods he/she will always give credit to everyone and even a message in big words saying that he/she did not work on any of these mods. Even with this, some egotistical mod authors threaten him with "legal action" to take down his compilation or else... Another example is having a great mod be taken down by the author from all download sites just because someone else is uploading them to other sites. They also state that the mod isn't theirs and they are just uploading it. People who download mods are now forced to look all over the internet just to find a download link for the mod. I feel really bad about the mod community as a whole after all these incidents. I'm sure you all have opinions that are supporting those authors and their great work but you make mods so other people can play them. What difference does it make if they are reuploading them? I'm sure there are people who credit no one and say that the mod belongs to them, but then again, why would you care? Most people wouldn't download from them anyways, and would spot the fake author easily. I never made any long terms mods myself but with the few models and skins I have made, I really don't care who uses it or who uploads it. I'm going to quote some authors here and give my opinion about what they just said. No names of course, I wouldn't want to get sued for using a copyrighted name :) "And while giving credit is a good thing, the old "better to ask forgiveness than permission" does not apply to copyright law. Which is what we're dealing with here." "I'm drafting an email to the person responsible for this at the moment. If it's not removed, I'll follow that up with DMCA notices. If anyone else would like to do similar, feel free to join in. Edit: Email sent, explaining the issues and requesting that it be "resolved." Hopefully there won't be any issues with this, as soon as things are explained. I am of the opinion that it's high time we show that the Morrowind community has zero tolerance for plagiarism. It's been in the rules for a while, but too many examples have been let slide (GIANTS in particular). " --Would someone seriously involve the law over something like a modification for a game? "I suppose I am a kind of "Gollum" modder, but not because I think my mods are precious. Rather, I keep them close to make sure that I can ensure a certain level of quality maintenance. Even now (and for the past year) I have been updating all of the textures in my MHP to higher levels of detail and resolution. I want to make sure that the mods I make available are the best that I am able to cobble. Its hard to update something for the better if it is locked within the confines of such a compilation." --This guy does make a good point though. Still, you can always work with the compiler to make sure he has the most updated version of your mod. "I always say yes to people using my mods and I've always made it clear that you can do whatever as long as credit is given. So something like this doesnt bother me in the slightest - I can see why people would be peeved but at the end of the day, why mod and release something you dont want other people to use? Alot of modders use the excuse that their mods cant be used in compendiums like this (or re-uploaded) simply because they are not surrported for version changes. " "I'm strongly against intellectual property and copyrights. In my opinion, if you release something to the public, it becomes property of the public. If you don't want that, don't release it." --Sadly, some great mod authors don't agree with this. In conclusion, has modding really become serious business?
