Resist_or_Serve Blog

welcome back to my multimedia blog (preview)

There are all kinds of happenings going on in the world of entertainment and I plan on talking about some of my favorites. Here is a quick list of some of the topics I will cover in future posts.

Anime Conventions you need to check out! Anime has become an even bigger part of my life in recent years and I plan to share it with as many people as will listen. Much of my anime preferences have not changed so I am looking forward to discussing new topics in this blog.

Twin Peaks returns! - This has become one of my favorite shows in recent times and I can't wait to talk about how revolutionary this show was at the time of its inception. In addition we have new seasons of The Walking Dead, Supernatural and Arrow as well as a new superhero series, Gotham to look into.

Resident Evil remake, The Evil Within, The Witcher 3, Borderlands: The pre-sequel, Assassin's Creed Unity, Persona Q, and plenty other games have been announced and are looking great! There is a lot to look at here and I want to discuss all of it!

Expect more in depth reviews of past favorites like The X Files, Stargate SG-1, Leverage, Bones, and more (including previously preferred topics House and Heroes) coupled with more recent movie reviews for films like Dracula: Untold and Guardians of the Galaxy.

There might even be a few music reviews here as well for bands you might not expect :) In the end I hope to keep you looking forward to new content as much as I enjoy creating it. Now let's get started!

Heroes - Yu Yu hakusho connection

Well it may seem odd but there are a couple of things that make me think that Tim Kring may have in some way been influenced by Yu Yu Hakusho. The first being that Niki's disorder plays out a lot like Sensui's (the fracturing of thier psychosis and whatnot) I know that could just be a coincedence so for now we will just have to wait and see what happens. As for the second of the reasons: Bob had asked his daughter Elle if she had been praticing her sharp-shooting skills when she responded with a familiar looking "spirit gun" poised finger that shot out electricity, which of course looks a lot like ki. Niether of these points are too terribly convincing but I really just wanted to get this out there and see what you all think.

Xenocide, Children of the Mind

I finally finsihed Orson Scott Card's masterpiece The Enders series (Enders Game, Speaker for the Dead, Xenocide, and Children of the Mind) I wrote of my thoughts on the second book and now I will continue my thoughts on the third and fourth. I must say that they are briliantly crafted and the characters are wonderful. Every one is differant and relateable in thier own way. More than that though, the story is of a grander scale which describes human nature as a destroyer and what we must do to remedy it. This is largely shown through the many characters interactions and after the second books we start to drift away soley from Enders point of view as we explore Miro and Peters as well as others, many of whom seem to be extensions of ender himself. We also read of an alternate story line that takes place at the same time that ultimately, in the fourth book, converges into the main plot. This plot being that Lustania (the planet on which our protagonists lie) will soon be destroyed by use of an ultimate destruction type device that has been sent by congress due to what they believe is an unavoidable plague that is carried by the people of the planet. The story is of Ender and his children, as well as wife and sister who work to save the people of Lustania, including a race of aliens known as the Piggies as well as the Hive Queen of the buggers whom were thought to be wiped out in the first book. There are many thought provoking issues delt with in the series, many of which I can not begin to describe. If you like books that make you think then check out this amazing series. i will continue to describe the books at a later date until satisfaction has been reached. I hope to allow the reader of this blog the realize how great these books really are and yearn to read them.

My thoughts on Harry Potter (now with revised content!!!)

I will now go on record here as saying that I am completely against anything Harry Potter. I say this mostly because for some unknown reason there are basically entire nations that obsess over anything Harry Potter related and yet it is completely undeserving. There are so many wonderful, amazingly well written books out there and yet barely ever get read, especially in todays society in which it has become more and more rare to see someone, young or old, reading a book that isn't of course Harry Potter. This as well as the fact that J.K. Rowling is insanely rich and yet still attempts to draw out every single penny from her undeservingly adoring fans through overpriced books and merch. This may have to do with the publisher as well but at this point both parties are at fault. It may have been smart to push the first novel as strongly as it was simply because you can never be too sure whether your success will be short lived but with all of the following novels it is simply ridiculous and I would hope that you people would be smart enough to realize that she is not the only author out there. Once again I will say that there are so many great books out there to be read that even I myself have not yet read. and Alan Rickaman is awesome. Snape kills Dumbledore!

Update - this is the simple reason for that original "revision" comment I put in the title as it is easy to look into more than what was written (also note that I put this in the category Opinion) First and foremost I never said in any form that the author wasn't worthy of praise for her writing talents as she is in fact a good author. As for the books themselves I only mentioned that they were undeserving of so much praise (which I still hold to be true) not that they themselves were poorly written. I merely meant to imply my distaste for those who would stand in line to pay $60 for a book in a series they only started reading due to the immense numbers of others who had done the same (given in to societal expectations) and although I know that this can't necessarily be drawn from my remarks and that it is often hard to understand intent in simple writing, I obviously never meant to say that ALL Harry Potter fans don't read other authors, in fact this would be quite stupid of me to say considering I personally have friends who read both Harry Potter books as well as many others. and as for my "biased thoughts", all opinions are biased as they are based on your own life experiences although I will say mine were a little rash. also were the books ever planned to retail at $60 before they (again both the author and the distributor) new that such a large audience was willing to pay such a price??? The answer, I think, is no. If J.K. Rowling was as she says she was before the books were written (by this I meen poor) then why would you risk alienating people from your last chance at success with such high prices? With this I could be wrong and of course the pricing scheme may have nothing to do with the author herself although I can only assume she has some rights to her own works. Alan Rickman is still awesome! and Snape kills Dumbledore...again

a few quick opinions of the games and events at E3 so far...(larger update)

about the press conferences:

X-Box 360: There was alot of number crunching involved in this one and being that I am not a huge fan of of the whole Halo fandom thing (more so this than the game itslelf) I can't say I was too impressed with the opening but it was a great way to open E3, at least it was something different. Now one thing that was both good and bad was that Microsoft really concetrated on games coming out this year. Good in that we saw alot of great titles that we get to play this year! but bad in that we didn't see much for the future. Although the game line up was great like I said before the resentation style was sort of borish.

Nintendo Wii: Here we saw some semi-big announcement, what with the addition of new periferals and all. Admittingly Wii does look interesting to say the least and it was fun to see the interaction between Reggie and Miyamoto. With the addition of videos to the graphs and numbers presentation was more intersting than Microsofts with one minor/major exception...there were no games for the hardcore gamer so I must say to all you who bought a Wii (me included) I can only hope that Nintendo hasn't forgotten us or the console that we all saw as revolutionizing gaming may be doing less than we thought to accomplish this goal.

Sony Playstation 3/PSP: With the introduction of humour Sony really did have the best resentation of E3. I don't meen to say that they are necessarily the winners of the console war but at very least they managed to conquer E3 (which makes up for last years lackluster performance) Sony managed to give information on titles that would be released in time for the holiday season as well as those in the near future. The announcement of a price cut was also big for them as it was largely unexpected. With the Metal Gear Solid 4 trailer, Killzone 2 demo, and Folklore the line up for the PS3 was lookiing pretty great. There was also PSP news when they announced a new "version" (which was ecpected and to me dissapointing escecially since I already own the previous version) and a slew of new titles for it.

as for the games: well for the 360, there are definitely games I will be getting in the future. One of which is of course Mass Effect which promises to be one of the best titles of any generation on any console. I apparently missed Square Enix during the "Day 1" presentation on G4 unless they plan to visit the "booth" on a later date. I am desperately in need of a job simply so i can afford all the great games coming out in the future. I must get Call of Duty 4:Modern Combat as it looks absolutely amazing. Haze looks great and I am thinking Infamous and ???? (I cant find the title of the game but it was being demoed for the 360) look like they will offer some great new game play which I hope to experience sometime soon. Echochrome may well be a must buy for the Playstation network and I am still seriously contemplating buying Stranglehold. Folklore seems to provide interesting game play as well. Resident Evil 5 is coming out next year so I must force myself not to think about it until then. Honestly I was a little underwhelmed by Halo 3. After the disappointment that was Halo 2, I just don't care for that series. Although I must admit that I have always somewhat despised the series for it legions of fanboys. I just can't stand people that can't admit the obvious flaws in games and/or consoles simply because of some profound effect it had on them when they first played it. I myself have been accused of being a Sony fanboy but can admit that the PS3 has its flaws and to me it is simply more convenient in its interface and the games it offers. I will also say that currently there aren't many great (or even good) games out for the console so if you have resisted buying one until now I would wait, although lucky for those of you who are seriously contemplating getting one, the recent announcement of a price cut will make it easier to afford. A freind of mine is going to buy a PS3 strictly based on MGS4 alone so this is not a foreign concept to me. I also think that by the time the game launches in early '08 there will be many more great reasons to buy a PS3 (including not only new releases for the platform itself but brand new blu-ray titles as well as downloadable content and Home) thus making it seem to me to be a sound investment. Pertaining to a MGS game being on the 360 it definitely seems possible although it won't be MGS4 and it has been announced that Hideo Kojima will not be heading further MGS projects.

- a lot more coming soon, sorry I have not been blogging but I recently moved and was unable to access the internet for three weeks (which still doesn't explain the 2+ months I have been inactive) so all I can say is sorry about that :P

My Lost Theory

As with my previous blog entry about Heroes theories, I simply don't want the work I put into this post to go to waste. Expect an upcoming post about how House M.D. has gone downhill (quite the decline) in its most recent season.

jacks dad not dead. the real gamechanger | 05/24/2007 9:49am

Ok, at first I thought as a possible explanation that he was pointing to the fact that even in death his father's alcohol level would be way above the "allowed" limits and that it was a sort of joke to point to his father's rather obvious relationship with alcohol. Then however I came upon a theory here on tv.com (damn you) that for now seems to explain everything. It is also very possible that the writers want us to think this and will actually take the show in a different direction. Now the proposed theory is...that they did in fact fly through a rift into another dimension. One in which there were no survivors of flight 815 (which I had previously thought was propaganda put up by the others rebel alliance. It has also been stated that it is not a purgatory so that is ruled out), Jack's father is still alive (but dead in thier own world), Locke's father thinks that both he and Locke are dead (because in this dimension, Locke did in fact die when he fell, how else would his father not have known that Locke continued his life to eventually become a regional manager at a box company)(I had previosuly thought that Locke's father was simply in a car accident caused by the initiative to get him on the island and drugged to get there as they had done previously with Juliette) and there in fact is no place for them in this alternate universe. This might explain why they aren't supposed to leave the island as it isn't thier world, why Jack would want to return to the island (the purposed "mistake" they made was most likely not that they were ambushed by antoher enemy but rather that they can't return to their own existance. (also making Charlies sacrifice pointless) Ben it seems was lying the whole time when he said thy would all die, semi-proved by when he was about to leave the camp to cut them off at the radio tower, he was asked what he would do. He replied by stating that he was going to make them stop. He never implied that he was gonig to tell the truth which he may well not have known or else one might assume that he would have provided them with it. Kate might also find that the deaths she caused are reversed in this universe and it is chance for her to start over as with many of the survivors), a security system that nobody knows about (in terms of what it is protecting which would in fact be the space/time continuum or something to that effect), and why Michael/Walt have not returned with help as they have by now realized that it is a separate world by either returning to their own or simply observing the differences in where ever it is they went. Walt I think is using his extraordinary gift (and possibly receiving a boost from the supernatural abilities of the island) and communicating from another dimension (most likely thier own) and thus the ghostly appearance. I will re-watch the season(s) to see if I can find any more clues to support my theory but it is what I currently think to be true. I would have gladly lived in ignorant bliss if it had not been for this website although due to the genius writing staff I can't say for sure if I am right or simply being fooled. Can anyone prove me incorrect or even further the theory? Aaron and Jacob are still a mystery to me although I assume the same can be said for most of you as well.  -  There is an article I found long ago that somehow related a consciousness on the island to a powerful Psychic that summoned the passengers to the island in order for Aaron to be born, allowing him to take host of a human body.  I think this presence is Jacob.  It is hard to describe the theory as I have long since forgotten it but it might explain both of them.

Heroes posts...

Honestly I put too much work into these to let someone casually read through it as they pass by the forums so I am hoping to get more readers as a blog post :D

Why didnt Peter just fly away and blow himself up?

*slight spoilers* I don't want to seem rude but it amazes me that someone wasn't able to put this rational string of thoughts/"scientific method" together sooner. There are some things I however can not be sure of. These I will mention first and explain the rest afterwards. First, my proposal is that it has to be that Peter has lost control due to a massive intake of new powers (presumably the thirty some odd powers Sylar has obtained) not going nuclear. Some have argued previously in another topic that Peter has encountered Sylar before and absorbed the telekinesis ability after seeing it used only once. Peter could have absorbed all of Sylars (then) abilities, which would have to be very few or else this incident would have happened sooner, or even Sylars own unique ability to obtain powers through the ?consumption? of brains but I think that it is more likely that this not the case. I am lead to assume that it is possible that Peter can only absorb a power once it has been activated in his presence. I think this has been the case in the past but I am not sure. Sylar would have had to then know this and purposefully "flare up" his powers so that Peter's body would then absorb them and become overloaded. I don't think this is out of the realm of possibility considering Sylar had just finished a painting of the "future" and recited the words "Peter Petrelli" aloud in an ominous voice much like he knew something that we as the audience didn't. To what this could be I have no idea considering it is also very possible it was a false representation of the future seeing as "...the future is not set in stone" and Sylar is a little mentally unstable. It seems to me that he purposefully went to that rooftop to kill Peter and it was well within his capabilities to "go nuclear" at any time. He said that he was a good guy and Peter the bad which normally doesn't make sense and very likely relates to the painting of the future he saw. The "too many powers" theory also may help to explain why Peter had to allow Nathan to fly him because as previously stated he would have had no control. Before I go further I feel I must mention that Ted had astounding control over his ability. He, before knowing his power was active, unknowingly emitted radioactive particles and accidentally killed his family of radiation poisoning which he later blamed on "the company" for giving him the ability. Now this also proves that his body has natural immunities to his own power (and presumably radiation/heat in general) which will become semi-important in this discussion later. Afterwards he displays amazing control of his power, which would consist of constantly commanding microscopic particles, (presumably by necessity seeing as he didn't want to kill anyone else) by being able to create separate heat emissions with no residual radiation and through mere description was able to create an EMP after never having heard of such a thing before. That, my fellow Heroes fanatics, is skill. The only reason he lost control in a previous episode was because Noah shot him with what I believe to be a psychotropic (although it may have been a normal bullet accomplishing the same effect) which would obviously mess with his ability to control his power. They were probably lucky to have kept it in check as long as it was. The only reason it stopped was that he was shot with a tranquilizer by Claire which may well have had some of the same effects of the "bullet" (loss of power) but presumably didn't. Now as for why it is not Ted's power is because the initial radiation burst from the blast would have killed all those standing below it besides possibly Claire (I am unsure of the full extent of her powers). If that wasn't enough the heat wave would have fried them all as well as anyone else that happened to be in the vicinity. All this not to mention the Fallout radiation which would have killed all of New York City (where as previously it was mentioned that only half of New York was destroyed) and quite possibly many, many more people and cities. None of this happened so I feel it is safe to assume that it is something other than a nuclear explosion . Tim Kring (who also created Crossing Jordan) and the writing staff also seem intelligent enough to realize this and correct the error. Peter had also (re)gained control of Ted's ability before and with Claude's training I would like to think that he wouldn't lose control for second time. I also think that if he gained Ted's full immunities to radiation and heat (although not the force created by the expanding particles) he would't need to use Claire's ability at all as he would be safe from almost any ill effects. This doesn't prove much of anything but I think it helps to further the fact that this wasn't a nuclear explosion. I honestly don't know if I had anything else to say but I think that about sums up my opinion. anyone still reading?

Your Top 3 Favourite Heroes. | 05/24/2007 2:58am

as for Sylar, he does believe himself to be hero so that somewhat qualifies him in this category. also it obviously depends on how you define Hero but mine are...

1.)Hiro - The character most suited for the comic book/geek audience that this show was originally designed for. He is comical and exemplifies a true hero.

2.)Matt - As previously stated he is a believable, "true to life" personality and I think Greg does a great job in bringing the character to life. I enjoy seeing his struggles and triumphs. He shows courage in the face of adversity and I respect that

3.) Peter - As mentioned, a person who we see grow from the beginning of the series from a meek nurse who doesn't know his place in the eternal struggle that is life into a smart, brave and understanding hero.

now as for Claire - she is currently a wonderful character that would be deserving of any top 3 if she hadn't pulled the emo "I can't do this" crap in the pilot. Maybe, for others, it makes the character all the more appealing now I don't know, but I can't get past that one fact.

I cannot stand Micah!!! No offense to the actor who I am sure is talented but I hate that character and the way it is portrayed. Presumably he is a genius (although no real proof has been offered to us) and yet he understands things he shouldn't like the fact his mom strips on the internet for money. Besides not understanding the sexual aspect of this, he probably shouldn't understand the true value of money (as most kids don't until they get a job) as it plays a large part in what she does. How could he understand this and yet doesn't seem to realize that his mom went to a lone shark (Linderman) to get him the money he "needed" for his education. What is even worse is when D.L. was trying his best to make ends meet making an honest living, Micah apparently wasn't aware that his father was having trouble finding work because he was falsely imprisoned and started acting like an a$$hole towards him like he was some horrible person (and would then continue to steal money from an ATM). Then the superior attitude he seems to bring always annoys me. His ability isn't so unique considering there are those who could accomplish many of the same feats using their own natural skill set. They are called hackers and I respect them more than the brat known as Micah.

Niki - Honestly why does this character exist? I like to trick myself into believing she is a berserker but truthfully she seems to have a simple case of schizophrenia. So her dad beat her and her sister(traumatizing no doubt but is this really a causal of superhuman strength?) and her sister died. Do these two events really coalesce into a raging alter ego (like the hulk )? I just don't understand why this character has been there since the pilot and has done almost nothing useful (in fact i don't think anything at all) I have already expressed my disdain of Micah so he isn't a factor. D.L. is awesome and if given the proper motivation he could have took Linderman out himself. Niki just seems boring to me so if anyone cares to intelligently explain why she is so deserving of so many peoples top 3 i would appreciate it.

I really hope someone agrees with me on this. - and thanks to Ace-O-Diamonds for the clarifications.

Speaker for the Dead...

"[Tim Chandler]Egghead's got a song about how hot dogs taste good...I know hot dogs taste good! [mc chris]I know you do, sir. [Tim Chandler]I eat hot dogs! [mc chris]I know, you have some on your desk..."

I finished reading the Speaker for the Dead finally and I msut say that the Enders series have been some of the most intriguing well written books I have ever read. I dont know if they can get any better but I will have a chance to find out when I start reading Xenocide (the next book in the series) I haven't gotten far but the beatifully written first chapter in contrast to the intoduction of the second was amazing. I can't really describe it but it was science-fiction at its best. If anyone is looking for a good read and happens to be a geek like myself, go ahead and pick up Ender's Game, it won't dissapoint.

Recently I watched a scrubs and house parodies on madtv. As a fan of both shows (although house has let me down this season...remind me to rant on the subject in my next blog) I think that the scrubs skit was well done and captured the show quite well although the statement akin to "maybe if we weren't all daydreaming and talking to each other we could have saved her" didn't quite fit. If you have watched Scrubs you know they all take thier jobs seriesly despite the humourous disspostion of the show. It did however make sense as I can understand why some might think that. The skit about House was less an attack on the show (talk about a show that should have been cancelled months ago) as just adding a silliness to it using Larry Kings comments. It was still well done although I think they should have done one addressing IMO the shows recent decline. Dont get me wrong though, House was one of the most brilliant shows to come out in recent times but the past season has shown us exactly how bad poorly written episodes can be.

Thats about it for now, amazingly I haven't seen a movie in theaters in the past week so I am out of movie reviews for now. as of now I will recommend Empire Records and Layer Cake if you have not seen them. They are both great and the first thing that came to mind :D

quick review of Kingdom Hearts II (not finished)

Well I have started to play KH II on normal (currently lvl 81) and although I have not beaten it I just wanted to ask if anyone else thinks that Kingdom Hearts II is worse off having decided to get rid of the platforming element that was in the original Kingdom Hearts? I find myself yearning for the greatness that was in the original but it just isn't there for me. All the bosses are heartless instead of the "dope-ass" disney bosses which is really disappointing. Using the platforming in the original there were more places to explore/hide treasure chests and ways to create epic boss battles (like the titans and Cerberus) Not to mention that there are few (at this point) new levels/characters. Most of the level designs are the same, uninspired levels we saw in the first. I also dont like the way the mp system they devised as well as all the (too) numerous skills you learn/the AP distribution system. Despite my multiple gripes, I will say that it is a great game, just not what I expected...the addition of armour is awesome (but who needs that many item slots?)

I hate the people on the internet... (Digg fiasco- read on for further details)

Ok so besides having to deal with **** on WoW and other such games, not to mention the sick humour circulating the internet that many seem to indulge in, i have to deal with this... Digg HD-DVD **** I can not believe people would be such $%&*9)@! so as to try and take down such a beloved site as Digg over someones stupid post (of the hex code to break the copy protection in HD-DVD). Please tell me all of you would never do something like this. Trust me I don't agree with the way the MPAA handles their business (after all, if anything they should have gone after the poster not Digg. Since Digg has more money though, they have more to gain) but that doesn't mean that these posters should attack Digg for their correct decision to remove the post in order to protect their own asses not to mention those of the supposed supporters of Digg (the users not HD-DVD) This infuriates me to no end! When did so many **** begin patrolling the internet? I want to go back to the time when computers were for nerds not people like that. Ok so this rant went on longer than I expected but at least now you know. Sorry for the explitives :P
