@MrDinky:No, I'm actually not white knighting anyone. This dude is just out of line and a pseudo-intellectual dork. Talking about "dedicating his whole life... yadda yadda", when he's probably some undergrad who thinks because he read some philosophy that he's somehow above others. See, I can make unfounded assumptions too an offend people. Don't be a tool.
The reviewer said nothing along the lines that this guy should be misconstruing it into some ultra PC/neoliberal snowflake agenda by the reviewer. I'm very liberal myself and don't buy into the ******** bs and super political correctness people exude to try and feel like protectors of the LGBTQ community or shove their lifestyle down everyone's throat. The closest thing the reviewer even said to anything along these lines was that basically the option to make a trans person was kind of a tacked on joke with no weight to the roleplaying aspect of the game. Which is true. I'd actually like to see the choice of sexual orientation make a difference on how you interact in a game world other than how sexual encounters with certain characters pan out, which seems to be all developers do. That would impress me more than "Hey you can put a vag on a guy and give him a girl voice, be happy".
I'd also like to see NPC's react differently to when my character walks down the street with his floppy wiener hanging out rather than blankly staring at me repeating stock lines. Demanding more out a developer ≠to "white knighting", nice try though. I never said I 100% agree with the reviewer, just that the game doesn't deserve a 9/10 in my opinion (yeah I'm allowed to have one of those, **** me right?).
Good game, I'm not responding to anymore comments here or following this post. I've said what I have to say. Don't bother responding if you think I'm going to care what you have to say, you've already shown your ignorance and devoid of "enlightening me" with your "big brains".
@mxdan: All I need to know is you're bringing in assumptions and your personal politics to a comment section of a videogame, simply because you didn't like the score it got. Get over yourself.
@Fia1: Agenda? It's nobody's agenda to have a buggy game. You're lucky if you haven't had any bugs that cause you to reload and start back over a sequence. It's also totally laughable that NPCs run around flailing like you've got a gun pointed at them when you accidentally dodge double tapping a key.
@mxdan: Well the main story narrative isn't that great, but I've spent more than 20 years reading sci fi and cyberpunk genre books so maybe my standards are too high, it is a videogame I guess. But it could have been so much more than what they gave us. In the gameplay department it's mediocre, but I guess that never stopped GTA from getting 9s (I don't like GTA, or Assassin's Creed either, sue me). Games don't get 9s if they're not well rounded in all aspects of what they're setting out to achieve. This game is 8.0 for me without the bugs, 7.0 is about spot on. I tell my friends to go play Deus EX series and Dishonored until the bugs are worked out if they haven't played those yet. CDPR also made another real clunker of a game called Witcher that spawned some really awesome sequels. So here's hoping to an awesome Cyberpunk 2, with an entirely new city, refined gameplay and better narrative.
Even without any bugs the game is an 8 for me. Maybe they'll have a kickass DLC that addresses mediocre combat (it really shows that this is the first FPS they've made) and has more role playing.
@mister-sandman I've been building PCs for over 12 years and totally agree with you on most things here, but buying used parts vs. a brand new machine isn't a good comparison. I could say oh well I can buy a used system for less than that if I search hard enough on craigslist. Also that $430 rig will not last at least 6 years, especially with an already outdated gpu/cpu setup unless you're satisfied with turning everything down to low after 2-3 years. Plus you didn't include the cost of the Operating System which is generally at least $100 and a hard drive which Would be at least $50 for something worthwhile and maybe a dvd drive of some sort , maybe $20. So you're looking at about $600-$700. Which, in my opinion, would be well worth spending the extra $100 or so over the Alienware Alpha.
As far as the alpha goes...
There are lots of small itx gaming cases that are coming out, but I don't know what kind of price point the build would be once you have the whole thing together (they may not be any cheaper than buying an alpha). Consider an i3 2.9ghz CPU and windows 8.1 OS (which the $550 alpha does include) will cost you nearly $250 between the two, and the alpha comes a wireless xbox360 controller also which is another $50. At this point you're not even including the cost of the case/memory/harddrive/powersupply/videocard. I would say you could probably build it yourself for maybe $500 (saves you $50 I guess, but alienware is going to have a better warranty than the parts dealers so that is a plus). Overall for someone who doesn't feel confident in building a gaming PC I would say the Alpha is sufficient for the money. Being a long time PC enthusiast though I would say spend a little more, get a better rig and have more fun building it yourself. It's more rewarding.
