I hope that Insomniac spend more time developing attributes that add to the game as a whole.
60 player deathmatch and shiny new weapons would be great, but I think they need to re-address the fundamentals that make first person shooters great. Challenging and inventive enemy A.I and creative battle set pieces were a bit sparse in the first game, so I hope they go back to basics to sort out some of their coding and scripted events before inventing a gun that shoots goldfish or something.
I said the Hitman series mainly because new iterations never seem to do too well in the sales chart despite being rated quite highly by the press. Also the games have managed to avoid some fairly major best of charts.
I implied that Hitman was an underrated series because games such as Metal Gear Solid and Devil May Cry steal much of the limelight when Hitman is very much on par with them. Has anyone on this post played a Hitman game? They're really quite brilliant!Â
I think for an overall rewarding experience I'd go for Final Fantasy XII. I've not yet finished the game but already I can see it shaping up to be one of the most rewarding video games I've ever played. Despite this, when I grew tired of the constant leveling up and chasing marks I picked up a copy of God of War II. It took less than ten hours to complete but that ten hours were much more exhilarating than any ten hours I played on Final Fantasy XII. Now though, I'm back on Final Fantasy having seen off Zeus and loving every second of it.
I prefer Final Fantasy, because I know that overall I'll get much more enjoyment out of it despite it being a slow burner. To put it in a form most of us will understand. What drink would you prefer from a bar, an ice cold pint of Carlsberg or a flaming shot of Sambuca.
In my opinion, it really depends on what game and how you play it. Occasionally I play videogames for what I would call an extended session (10+ hours) and cut scenes are an excellent way to get me involved in the story. The extended cut scene would not be appropriate for a game on my PSP as I play this on the bus to work and haven't the time (or attention span) to sit through thirty minutes of cut scene.
In all honesty I prefer a good cut scene in a game, however a bad one can detract from what can be a great experience. I cast my mind back to Resident Evil ('You were almost a Jill sandwich') and how much the cut scenes in that detracted from the rising tension of the gameplay.
As with all production ideas in video games it comes down to two basic elements; relativity and delivery.
I also agree with whoever it was that said Tenchu. The original heralded the start of the contemporary (PS1) stealth game even before Metal Gear Solid. For this reason alone it requires more recognition.
Personally I think the Hitman series was vastly underrated collection of games. I've been playing Blood Money since release date and can still find new ways to kill marks. Wonderful.
