[QUOTE="L_G_X"]

Hello there guys and (few) girls...

Ill make this quick...

Last gen, playstation 2 was the outright winner (in most peoples eyes) however if you think about it, xbox and even gamecube still had the ps2s best multiplat games...GTA, BURNOUT for example, multiplat yet best examples of their genre...even though most ps2 games were complete shovelware and an identical, if not superior, experience could be found on an xbox or even a gamecube...

Now what pushed the ps2 was word of mouth and its brand name....Seriously i **** you not, i would say around 9/10 people i know OWN a ps2...they dont even PLAY VIDEOGAMES, but they OWN A PS2...

Believe it or not theres a world outside system wars...and there are many more people out in it then in here....now these people and their mothers arnt going to look on gaming forums and websites and see how "TEH PS£ HAS NO GAMES!!" and "OMG 360 SOOO MUCH BETTORZ!!!" they will simply see the name PLAYSTATIONand buy it....

Do you really think ps3 could have sold half ofwhat the 360sold in two years, in its first year, if people did their research thenthe ps3 wuldnt be selling nearly as well but it is selling VERY VERY WELL for a console that has "no games" and is "overpriced" and once again it is because of what you may call "casuals"simply going into a shop and overlooking the xbox and wii to get a playstation since it is such a large brand name....

So you really think all these people who have a ps2 and dont even play it...when they go for a next console ofcourse they will go for a PLAYSTATION product and overlook XBOX...

the wii is in a good position because every little child and their grannie wants it...

Brand recognition is only true to a very minor point.

As others have pointed out, other brands have been big at some point (Atari, Nintendo) only to get their butt kicked by competition.

This is honesty comming from a former casual, casuals buy what ever is popular. They don't run out and buy systems a launch.

As a casual, I started on a Mattel Intellivision, then had aNES, moved to a Sega Genesis ending with PS1. See the pattern? NO brand loyalty, casual gamers don't have brand loyalty.

I did not develop brand loyalty untill last gen. I ended up a manticore, but defended MS to the point that I feel a sense of loyalty towards them.

Now I'm just a gamer. I own 360 and Wii and when the PS3 offers me something I really want (either I get really into wanting Hi Def Movies OR PS3 gets enough games I cannot already play on my other systems that make a $400 purchase seem worth it)I'll have it as well.

The point though is casual gamers buy what they play at a friend's house or what they hear everyone talking about.

Now I agree, brand loyalty HAS gotten them this far. Only Sony fans or gamers with a lot of money to spare have bought the system so far. The casuals, the type of people who would never post on here,(the type of people who ballooned the installed base to 120 million)have already moved or will likely move to another system.

Are you sure you are a gamer? cos you make a lot of sense!

This is just like Making fun of the Nerd at school that gets good grades, while you get D's and F's.

The only thing the Wii has over the 360 is hardware sales. Games and good online are what make a console. The reason way the Wii is going through an explosion of sales is because it's a fad for people who don't play video games. Some people are buying one JUST for Wii sports.

Ever bothered to look at the 360's first year? The Wii has had more million sellers and just as many AAAs in its first year as the 360, which didn't really take off in terms of game quality until November.

Hell, back in 2006, Saints Row and Dead Rising were considered "big killer apps" until Gears came out. How sad is that?

i agree with you there 100%! if you compare wii's first year to 360's first year, wii wins all the way!

[QUOTE="mjarantilla"]So the DS has "never been sustainable" for three years now? Because the Wii appears to be following stride-for-stride in the DS's foosteps.mjarantilla

I think he was referring more towards what happened with the Nintendo 64 and Gamecube.

But I think the Wii will sell so much that it won't really matter, it'll be like the Playstation 2 in terms of software sales. Even trash games will sell.

Thats not happening at all, there are no Gears of Wars, Metal Gear Solids, Grand Theft Autos, Final Fantasies (spin-offs arent what im talkin about), Devil May Crys or any other huge third party wii games.

Funny, since the PSP did get Metal Gear Solids, GTAs, and Final Fantasies (ok, FF spinoffs, but FF7CC was as big a system seller as any main FF game), yet it still is a distant, distant second to the DS, which has none of those except FF remakes.

That is so true.

[QUOTE="Heil68"][QUOTE="darkIink"]American gamers love playing games with guns and chainsaws, and blowing sh** up in the game makes another tired shooter AAA worthy here **coughcough*gears*halo**cough***VideoGameGuy

YOu must not have seen the stat where only around 10% of the 360's games are shooters. **cough*you*fail**cough***

And yet:

Gears of War 4 million

Halo 3 3.7 million

Oblivion 3 million

Crackdown 1.5 million

PDZ 1.5 million

Call of Duty 2 1.4 million

Saints Row 1.4 million

Lost Planet 1.4 million

Dead Rising 1.3 million

Madden 07 1.1 million

Dead or Alive 4 1 million

Tom Clancys' Advanced Warfighter 1 million

See a theme there? Al the best selling games are shooters or ultraviolent games, save for Madden.. So yeah 10% shooters makes up for alot bigger margin of total software sold.

I concur 100%!

[QUOTE="RobinHood"]Am from the UK and i can tell you things are getting out of control... its becoming a frenzy, a lot of retailers are fed up of people constantly asking about Wii stocks that they are putting up signs at the door saying "Wii out of stock". the demand is just unpresidented!drewtwo99

That's really interesting. I wonder why in the UK so much? In the states, I'm not seeing any signs... yet. Are they shipping less to the UK for some reason for the hollidays?

who knows? but i hope not, it seems that every kid and every adult in the land wants a Wii for christmas. Its perceived as the coolest gadget in town, the gaming ipod.

i think it affected your judgement and common sense

besides it is only one game comeback when you have more games to brag about

like this!!

molinex

That thing looks great! Too bad the bids are already above the price of a PS3 :P EDIT: I just realized the bid ends Oct-01. By then it will be well above a thousand bucks. Insane.Solid_Snake_7

it will be interesting to see how high the bids get!
