Here goes part two of a four day series of the top 10 games of all time. Yesturday we had the #10-8 come in. Heres a quick recap for those who didn't see it and don't want to go back and look. #10 was one of the first MMORPG's of all time....everquest. #9 was one of the powerhouse RTS games....Age of Empires 2. And #8 was the legendary Russian puzzle game....tetris! Now lets get started on #7-5.
7.) Legend of Zelda
One of the most beloved games of all time, Legend of Zelda is a bonafide clasic, and with good reason. Zelda was the first "action-adventure" title that most people had ever come across, and its mix of action, interesting puzzles, fantastic (for the time) graphics, slowly expanding story, and hidden areas kept gamers glued to the screen. Then... just when you thought you had it beat, the game throws you a curveball and sets you back down in a world that's not only completely scrambled from when last you saw it, but is twice as hard on the hero as the first time. This game is a clasic and many people who lived during the time probably still have it somewhere in their basement. It's an RPG that started the beloved franchise that has debuted on every nintendo console made. Of course, those sequels were never quite as good as the original Legend of Zelda and therefore it bags a spot on the list.
6.) STARCRAFT
Lets be honest here. Who hasnt played Starcraft? Even just a little at their friends house? This game took the nation/world by storm as the BEST RTS game ever developed. This game is extremely old and looking at the graphics its easily noticable. With hindsight, it seems almost comical that many wondered if Blizzard could pull it off. Command & Conquer and Total Annihilation had set the bar for how a modern RTS would handle. Blizzard not only leapt over the bar, but blew the competition away with StarCraft, which dominated sales for 1998 and 1999. Wizards, Orcs and Trolls gave way to Marines, Protoss and Zerg, backed by a surprisingly effective storyline and cast of characters. And Blizzard's commitment to getting it right the first time made for a hassle-free game that was simply a joy to play. It is still extemely popular in Korea and is finally going to see its next-gen appearance as the sequel is due out later this year.
5.) Diablo
You are one young, inexperienced soul, chosen to fight for the town of Tristram and save it from Diablo, The Lord of Terror. How could you hope to survive? The tale of Diablo was as engrossing as it was addictive. Not only was there replay value in the fact that you could play three different characters -- the hack-and-slash warrior, the "attack-at-range" and "detect-the-traps" rogue, or the "magic-is-all-powerful" sorcerer -- but the game offered a variety of quests that changed every time you played. And not only did the quests change, but the dungeon levels did as well, each randomly generated unless part of a specific quest. Magic items also provided a unique experience as the game engine created most items randomly. There was never a game of Diablo that played the same way twice. Add to that Blizzard's renowned ability of making stunning cinematics and haunting music and you have a game truly worthy of a place in the Top 10 games of all time.
Tomorrow we will finally break into the final 4. Only four more left and the games just keep getting better! We have two great FPS games along with ANOTHER rts game. All here tomorrow!
