I have been a fan of clive barker for 10 years now, I know I shouldnt of watched the movies for another 5 years before I started but hey my mom didnt know and I was a rebelious teenager who knew it all. Well I decided to buy the book that he wrote before the classic cult horror was made into a movie in 1987and boy what a big let down it was. I wish I hadnt of bothered getting the book now it makes the movie look 10x better when its supposed to be the other way around, the books are supposed to be better than the actual movies because the writer has much more time to lead up to an intimidating scene or a crucial part of the storyline.
The book was 128 pages of pure boredom! I have never been let down so much by a book seriously. For starters the book was completely different to the movie that was made. The way they described the female cenobite was actually the way they portrayed Pinhead the lead cenobite, the torture before they ripped him apart was much better than the movies. The main characters in the movie were called Larry and Julia a husband and wife, the husband and wife part is the same in the book but the name of the male has been changed to Rory. In the movie Larry had a daughter called Kirsty from a previous marriage, in the book they were just a group of friends so that was off putting as well. Also there was a scene in the movie where Julia and Frank got together and well you know what happened, in the book he was supposed to have forced her to have the more then brother and sister in law relationship, so that to me was a whole new storyline and shouldnt of been done.
Maybe it was me expecting too much of a book, but there again I am a huge fan of Stephen King also and find that his books are also descriptive to a great deal that the movies they make out of his book do tend to be true to the storylines they are never changed drastically like they have done with Clive Barker's Hellraiser. Maybe watching the movie before reading the book destroyed the feeling of the book I dont know maybe someone out there can agree with me or maybe they can disagree with me and shed some light on it from their perspective.
Also with the re-make coming out this year, I am not too sure about watching it neither as Clive is writting the onscreen production himself and I am pretty sure that he didnt have as much say in the original one like he is having with this one. Also looking on the Internet Movie Data Base (IMDB) site they have not announced who is going to be in the movie yet, so that is a little unerving as I have read somewhere that Doug Bradley the original man behind Pinhead has not been approached to play him in the re-make so that is going to put me off also if they chose someone else as Hellraiser turned 20 last year and its taken him almost 20 years to perfect the role of pinhead.
So now that I have read the book I have been waiting like nearly 4 years to read I have decided to give myself a change and read some Patricia Cornwell, I only ever read horror novels but I have decided to try something new as my husband has ever book of hers and enjoys them and says they are worth reading as they are similar to the CSI series on the TV and I watch that occasionaly when I am bored. There has been no room for gaming with me yet as the children are still off from school, so i am waiting on them going back and maybe I can cram a few hours in each night of God of War on the God run that GMG is so graciously helping me out with when I need his assistance. Hope you all had a wonderful new years eve and stayed safe I will leave you with this now and get on with surfing for new gaming Ideas.
