Oh dear, the amount of TDWP and BFMV in this thread...... Converge, KSE, Unearth, BTBAM (debatable), Misery Signals, Chimaira (everything from and incl The Impossibility of Reason is at least metalcore influenced), Parkway Drive (well just Killing With A Smile IMO), Caliban, Heaven Shall Burn, 7 Angels 7 Plagues, TDEP, August Burns Red, Architects, Shadows Fall (pre-Fallout From The War). If you count them as metalcore, Lamb of God, but I personally don't so meh. Off the top of my head.
With that monitor, you'd be able to run Crysis on high with a 7800GS or X1950 Pro... Somebody has a lot of money to spend if they're getting a 4870X2 for 1024x768. Balance the budget out a bit and get a 1680x1050 monitor with a 4850.
The human eye doesn't notice stuttering at somewhere between 26-30fps and above, so 30fps is smooth. It's all you need, the only benefit of 200fps over 30fps is peace of mind. Just turn off the FPS counter in FRAPS or ATI Tray Tools, lol. Considering my slightly OCd ATI X1950 Pro of all cards can play Crysis, 1680x1050 at medium, never going below 28fps, looks like some people here really do have CPU bottlenecks. Anyway. I'd go with Vista 4gb cos of Dx10. No, seriously. It doesn't matter if it's bad or not, the situation will get better, even if game makers are sticking to 9 now, they will eventually move onto 10. Though by then 11 will probably be released... Anyway, 10 isn't always a performance loss. Take PCSX2 for example. GSDX with PS4 is better than PS3 (not the console). Faster and in some cases, looks better. Though you can't directly compare emulation to normal game playing, it shows that if used right, 10 can be better than 9.
The correction was 1 core, on the first line of my previous post. Where I said "The one that is actually installed is better. It's WAY faster, and it has 4 cores vs a Pentium 4 that has 2 cores." It's cos the specs alienware gave you are confusing, a Pentium 4 Dual Core? It's either a Pentium 4, a Pentium D or a Pentium Dual Core. They're different, all 3. But never mind that, your current CPU is way better than what alienware promised you, and for that, I wouldn't contact them about it in case you're forced to return it. Somehow. Not sure how it works.
The one that is actually installed is better. It's WAY faster, and it has 4 cores vs a Pentium 4 that has 2 cores. It says Pentium 4 Dual Core in the first post... I'll assume that means the Pentium D which is basically 2 Pentium 4s mashed together. As if the P4s didn't already have high heat and power consumption, intel took 2 and put them in 1. Keep the Q6700. It's 10x better. Seriously.
It's pretty much given that a new Q6600 will reach ~3ghz on stock voltage, with a decent motherboard. The Q6600 at 3ghz will outperform the E8400 at 4ghz with quad core apps that scale well on multiple cores, and those are growing. Slowly but we'll get there :) The E8400 is far better for current apps where they're only dual core as at the same frequency, it'll outperform the Q6600 in dual core apps. I don't think anyone would flame you for either choice, personally though, I have a Q6600 at 3.4ghz with a minor voltage raise and I'm happy with it.
