There really aren't many 3d platforming games. Most of them are childish adventure games.
Sadly, this. ^
It's unfortunate that Mario 64 had to be the template that most developers refer to with this genre. Luckily Nintendo pulled themselves out of it and started creating true 3d platformers, but for the rest of the industry they're still trying to emulate the childish adventure game template that Mario 64 laid out for us.
Never could get into the pixel counting game myself. Don't get me wrong, when buying a multiplat I make sure to get the best version possible since they all cost the same anyways.. but trying "pwn" people because you're playing the exact same game with minor, if not negligible differences never made sense to me.
On one hand a lot of the artificial (cheap) challenge from the old school days has been done away with through better design.
But then there is the reality that gaming is now full blown mainstream and only getting bigger by the day. Â Things have to get "dumbed down" to appeal to a broader audience.
I think the 6th gen was the sweet spot when it came to this particular aspect of gaming.

This, but I'd argue that the fifth gen had the best balance. Â Even the 4th wasnt too shabby.
