So it's been 3 years since I've been active here. 3 long years. I'm sure those of you who are still active probably don't even remember who I am anymore, but oh well.
To kick off my return I've decided to show off what some of my favorite games are to give people the gist of my taste, so here goes.
Ico - This game is incredible in that it manages to tell a story, evoke emotion from the player, and form characters that you genuinely care about with almost no words at all. It features beautiful environments and some of the most well thought out puzzles I've come across in gaming. A true work of art, and a masterful game.
Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne - A very stylish and unforgiving RPG that requires you to use strategy 100% of the time. The press turn battle system never gets old for me, unlike the countess other turnbased systems that just feel tedious. Constantly trying to survive in this atmospheric, immersive post apocalyptic world with no one but demons by your side; on a journey to reshape the world as you see fit (for better or worse), is an experience I will not soon forget. My favorite game in the SMT series and my favorite RPG overall.
Demon's Souls - Like Nocturne, this game is very unforgiving and very atmospheric, but also one of the most rewarding games you'll ever play. The feeling I got after taking down Tower Knight for the first time is still unsurpassed. It features a unique and innovative online mode that I've spent countless hours on; either invading players or helping them out.
Metal Gear Solid 2 - Now it took a lot of consideration to decide on which MGS game to add here, as they're all fantastic. Ultimately I decided on MGS2 for its superior plot and more well developed characters all around. From main characters to villains, they are all well fleshed out, unlike some of the other entries in the series. The fact that it added a ton of gameplay overhauls to the series that soon became the standard is nice too. I know this game has a lot of haters due to Raiden not being as "badass" as Snake. All I can say to that is: grow up. He's a fascinating character and a nice breath of fresh air into the series.
Deus Ex - This game was so ahead of its time that the games of today still don't match up to it. Interaction with nearly everything in the environment and individual body parts that take separate damage resulting in realistic effects on the character (for instance; if you get shot in the arm you won't be able you aim very well, or if you get shot in the legs to much you will literally have to crawl through the level until you can heal yourself.) almost guarantees you will be sitting on the edge of you seat multiple times. The plot is intelligent and thought-provoking. Any cyberpunk fan, and any fan of GAMING in general owes it to themselves to play this masterpiece if they haven't already.
Xenogears - Plot, plot, plot. That's the main focus of most JRPGS is it not? Well, this is it. This is pinnacle of storytelling in JRPGS. The plot is complex and very philisopical. The characters and their relations are all developed to an extent you just don't see in video games. On the gameplay side of things it uses a sort of "dial up" turnbased combat, where each button preforms a different attack and you sting them together. This helps prevent the combat from becoming too dull as there are tons of combinations.
To be continued.
