Are Video Games art?

-Obviously not. Me and a friend were playing Sonic Unleashed on his Xbox 360, man that game sucked. Horrible controls, terrible level design, it was laughable.

-Obviously. As I played Metal Gear Solid 4, I was frequently feeling the same emotions as the characters, sadness, despair, more sadness, and the overall beauty of the game. A perfect game to use as a tool if you are arguing the point that video games are art.

- My point is, both parties are wrong. 'Video Games are art!' False. 'Video Games aren't art!' False. Are 'books' art? Movies? No. SOME movies are, SOME books are, SOME video games are. For example, if a non-gamer just plays a terribly shallow video game like Lollipop Chainsaw, no doubt he will think video games are a shallow and thoughtless form of 'entertainment'. However, if he plays Shadows of the Colossus, no doubt he will think that video games are a new, interesting, and thoughtful form of media.

But of course, one must remember, art, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder. To sum it up in a sentence, I think some video games are art, just like how some movies and some books are. So what are your thoughts on video games as art? Do you want video games to keep pushing artistic borders, or do you enjoy simpler games?
