As I'm sure you guys know from hints and wee bits of my blogs here and there, my childhood was rough. I think that's why I played video games so much as a child, they were a way for me to escape from reality.
My childhood savior
My first console was the NES and Super Mario Bros. That started my great relationship with Nintendo. I remember being obsessed with playing Super Mario Bros 3, trying to find every secret. I loved the living crap out of the NES, so I naturally loved the SNES, even more than the NES in fact. Super Mario World, Yoshi's Island, Donkey Kong Country, the SNES is tied with the PS2 as my favourite console. I'd also bring my gameboy around with me wherever I'd go. However, I got a PS1 instead of a N64 originally, so next up was the Gamecube. It was easy to enjoy the Gamecube with fantastic titles like Super Mario Sunshine, The Wind Waker, and one of my favourites, Twilight Princess.
Despite hearing many people dislike Nintendo's new Wii system for it's lack of HD graphics and games, I got it and we very pleased. The first game I got for the Wii was the stunning and superb Super Mario Galaxy. The Wii continued to get fantastic first party games, even if for the first time, it got little to no great third party games.... I got a 3DS about a year and a half ago, and Nintendo has done a great job supporting it.
What is that?!
Now comes the Wii U. I'm probably going to break and get one around December. But Nintendo's continued dislike of creating new IPs and getting little to no third party support because of simply how different their consoles are, things aren't looking too bright for Nintendo. It feels like they are catering less to their old fans and more to new, younger fans. There is certainly nothing wrong with that, but my interest in the Wii U has been stymied because of that. At E3, Nintendo announced a ton of fantastic looking games. For me, this is Nintendo's last chance to really impress me before I eventually abandon them. That being said, I find it REALLY hard not to get all nostalgic and excited whenever Nintendo starts tugging at the heartstrings again.
What do you think of Nintendo now days?
