God of War is set in mythological Ancient Greece. Some sexism is expected, if not essential. Personally I'm tired of 21st Century Strong Independent Woman showing up in the Crusades or Baroque France or the Roman Empire or whatnot (which is entirely different from a era/country-appropriate Strong Independent Woman like, say, Queen Gorgo from 300).
Does GoW glorify violence against women? No. Really, it goes out of its way to avoid violence against women, even omitting the major and powerful warrior goddess Artemis from GoW3. I wouldn't be surprised if Apollo is never shown up just because it's much harder to seperate Apollo and Artemis than it is to seperate Helios and Selene.
The Poseidon Princess, I believe, is the main focus of this, and I can kind of see where people who object to that sequence are coming from, especially with the somewhat bizarre trophy. At the same time, after the brutal deaths of the Athenian sacrifice, the Argonaut, Icarus and Perithous, I think a lot people are just leaping to "must defend woman!" without connecting the dots that Kratos kills everybody in horrible ways.
