Robert Craig "Evel" Knievel, Jr. died on Friday and I'm very sad.
He was my hero when I was a kid and I'm really having to man up while I'm writing this to keep from crying. When I say he was my hero I don't mean oh I liked that guy or I was a big fan I mean he was my hero and I mean that in the strongest possible terms. When I was a little boy he showed me that I should be proud to be an American. He taught me about courage and what it means to stand up for your convictions no matter what other people think about you.
Back then I had a giant poster with 8 or so pictures of his stunts with a big picture of him in the middle On it was a quote and I don't even have to look it up, I can quote it from memory.
It's better to take a chance in life to win a victory or suffer defeat even though scarred by failure... than it is to live in the shadow of life as some do never knowing victory or defeat because they have not the guts to try either... Theodore Roosevelt quoted by Evel Knievel
Evel was by no means a perfect man but he is a legend. He will always be my hero.
Robert Craig "Evel" Knievel(October 17, 1938 - November 30, 2007)
Rest In Peace
I'm going to go pout now.
