And my two cents: personally I think the movie is pretty good, but I dislike the books A LOT. I managed to finish the first but can barely finish the second one. The plot is probably the only thing that's decent. Writing is horrible and characters are awfully one dimensional.

Agreed. I used to live there. I liked it a lot, but it's kinda dangerous to go out at night. Even so, they have really friendly people in general.
