I really should be in bed since I have class at 8:30 AM but my anime club at university just finished this anime and I feel like writing about it. Daily Lives of High School Boys (Danshi Koukousei no Nichijou) is a comedy anime featuring... well the daily lives of high school boys. The three "main" characters are all otakus and how they deal with their friends and girls is hilarious. Each episode is 24 minutes (without commercials) and each episode has 5 or 6 skits in them. There are only 12 episodes to this anime which is really short. I thought Cardcaptor Sakura was short... I really have to keep telling myself that Cardcaptor Sakura was actually one of the longer animes out there.
So being that this is a comedy anime, and the creators even flat out said you don't have to remember the characters' names which is pretty funny, there isn't a real story or any plot. Well, the plot is the group of high school boys going through daily life. There are some girls mixed in mostly for comedy purposes and at the end of almost every episode there is a group of three girls who take on the starring role for a couple of minutes. Their story is obviously told on the side but they do have a relation to the main characters. For the most part the girls in this anime, unless they're not "evil" supporting characters, don't have eyes. I guess it's part of the whole high school part where girls and guys still don't interact with each other much. But anyway, back to the main characters. There are three "main" characters: Tadakuni, Hidenori and Yosh itake (had to separate the name since a bad word is in the name :P). I put main in quotes because they aren't in every skit and Tadakuni, who is introduced first seemingly as the protagonist and gets the anime started, isn't even in one episode at all except for the opening. Tadakuni is the even-headed one which is probably why he doesn't appear as much, Hidenori who I believe has the most screen time is the crazy guy in the group and Yosh itake often follows Hidenori's schemes.
The majority of the skits are comedic in nature but there are a few which focuses on character background and relationships in an attempt to make the viewers more attached to the characters which worked somewhat. At the end you felt enough of a connection to the characters to have a reaction to the ending. Well, that's even if you remember all of the characters' names. There are more supporting characters than there are episodes and they even introduce some new characters in the 2nd last episode. It's a little confusing trying to keep track of all the characters especially since with some of the girls, they don't show their eyes which gets in the way. Usually I'm good at remembering faces but if you don't complete the face I'm not going to remember who it is. To add to the confusion, they don't even give names to some of the girl characters instead referring to them as their sister or friend which doesn't help much since there are so many people in the anime.
For people who are looking for a good laugh this is definetely good for you to watch at least one time. I'll probably go through this one more time for the laughs before I stop. Comedic factor is definetely high; around a 8.5/10 for me. As just a regular anime tough, coming off the back of Cardcaptor Sakura that had great character development this was a tough one. Overall, I would give this a 7.5/10.
We're also watching another one called Oban Star Racers which, I couldn't believe when one of my clubmates told me, is a French anime which got support from Japan. It's pretty good so far but I jumped in halfway so I need to go back and find out what happened beforehand. It's an English dub but it's a pretty good dub actually so far; I haven't seen too many lip-synching fails yet. I'll let you guys know how that one is when we're done with it.
Until next time, keep gaming! I might end up changing this line soon... :P
