Don't get me wrong – I like Final Fantasy XIII. The game has beautiful art design and is a joy to look at. It's also having a pretty good combat system where you feel like you are actually beating up on the enemy.
What made the game a bit of a nuisance to play for me was the music. Not that the music is bad but its just so misplaced. During a Cut sheen where a main character is telling a tragic story the music is hammering away playing something that would be great in a western parody. This would normally not be a problem as I tend to crank the volume down on the music in games but this is not an option the developers see fit to grant me. For me its seems strange they made this choice – I would understand if the music played a part in the story but given the strange matching of mood and music they made this doesn't seem to be the case.
It might just be me not understanding the JRPG genre but if this is the normal music to impose on this type I'll probably pass the next one. And this is a shame as I really like Final Fantasy XIII I just wished they would have given me the option to play without either the sound turned off or risk a mental breakdown.
So if your like me and have a problem ignoring the music you might thing twice before digging into Final Fantasy XIII. If not then go get the game – the story is good, the combat is good, the graphics is good and you will get good value for your money.
