A review!!!

Thisis a review from the local paper of the show I'm in... has to be said, what a cracking review :D

" A lively and energetic re-imagining of a Gilbert and Sullivan classic - usually performed in tandem with Trial By Jury, but fleshed out here with a host of extra numbers and routines - the latest offering from Swansea Amateur Operatic Society is an absolute joy from first to last. This is a 21st century update of the original, with a very different and dynamic orchestral arrangement, and I suspect that purists might bristle at the production's irreverence: worth remembering, however, that G & S themselves were hardly known for their reverence and would happily prick the bubble of pomposity at every opportunity, which is what makes their works all the more enjoyable.

Directed and choreographed by Martyn Knight with the assistance of Jean Conway and musical direction from Christopher Pike, this show is utterly delightful and exploits the talents of a very large and talented cast to the full.

There are some wonderful performances here: Andrew Powell's rich vocals are ideally suited to the role of Captain Corcoran, as are those of Andrew Wilton, who portrays Sir Joseph Porter. Excellent characterisations, too, from the likes of Dean Walker (Dick Deadeye), Dean Parker(Ralph Rackstraw), and Clare O'Leary (Josephine). Leah Colbert's larger-than-life portrayal of Buttercup is particularly strong and sassy, while extra glamour is provided by the "Singlettes" (Danielle Aston, Sally Aston and Joanna Pope) - not to mention the chorus who make up the assorted sisters, cousins and aunts.

There are a host of cheeky topical references, and the finale even includes in-jokes related to other G & S operettas such as The Mikado and The Pirates of Penzance. Hopefully the pace and atmosphere of this hugely enjoyable show will win over those who consider tinkering with the works of G & S to be sacrilegious. This is a real crowd pleaser, and hopefully the box office tills will be ringing loudly until the show reaches the end of its run on Saturday.
