Call Of Duty World At War: Directors Cut

No Caption Provided

Of all the games in the Call Of Duty franchise's history, Call Of Duty World At War is the one Call of Duty game that I would like to see remastered the most. But then I thought, why settle for a simple remaster when there is so much more that can be done with modern technology?

Going to World At War's Wiki page for cut content, you can find that much of what the devs had planned for in the 2008 game was scrapped due to either time constraints or the technical limitations of the seventh-gen consoles.

My ideal remake for World At War would be a graphical upgrade of the campaign for the ninth gen consoles and PC with much of the cut content, including levels, weapons, and even possibly cut multiplayer maps- provided the developers would go all out with this remake, and remaster the multiplayer as well.

With Raven Software supposedly working on a Call Of Duty campaign of their own and given the excellent job they did with The remaster for Call Of Duty 4 and the campaign for Call Of Duty Black Ops: Cold War, I think that they should be given the honor of remaking this game.

Add in some new songs from the composer of the original game, Sean Murray, and you have a remake that I can see plenty of people willing to buy.

Given that all four zombie maps for World At War have been remastered already, I don't think it would be necessary to incorporate those into the remake, though it would be a nice bonus.

With the limited information given about some of the cut levels in the Wiki, I will attempt to fill in the blanks with my imagination to create my ideal stories based on what is known about them.

CUT CAMPAIGN MISSIONS:

PROLOGUE:

According to the Wiki, this level would take place before the first level and show how the Japanese captured your player at the beginning of the game.

You play as an unnamed marine awakened by an officer who tells you, you are low on ammo and awaiting reinforcements after repelling the first wave of enemies, the second wave of attacks. The player either runs out of ammunition, or a timer runs out when he is warned of someone behind him, and the player is decapitated from behind, killing them, with the screen going dark.

That sounds like a great way to start the game; Make it so that you feel hopelessly outnumbered at the beginning; that way, when the first mission, Semper fi, Starts, you feel as though the tables have turned when your fellow marines storm Makin Atoll.

This prologue mission could have set the mood for the rest of the game.

I love the mission Semper Fi in World At War, but we didn't get to see the enemy soldiers committing any atrocities outside of one POW who gets his throat slit after being repeatedly beaten by the Japanese officer whose superior burns a cigar in his eye.

I'm not saying the game needs to feature prolonged sequences of torture. However, showing more of the enemy's brutality would cement them further as people you want to see defeated.

FLY:

Taking place right before 'Hard Landing,' this mission would focus on aerial combat.

You play as the pilot in the plane that the Japanese booby trap in that mission.

After taking out a significant number of Japanese planes and ships, your plane has taken heavy damage. You land in the jungle, hoping to meet up with your teammates, only to be ambushed by the Japanese as they kill you and lace your body with explosives.

RHINELAND:

There were plans for three levels that took place in Rhineland, an area in western Germany near the Rhine, a major European river.

RHINELAND1:

You play as a French resistance fighter infiltrating a German compound in this mission. You and a small team are tasked with rescuing civilians from being killed by German forces,

RHINELAND2:

This would be primarily a snipper mission where you aid your allies by sniping Enemies from across the river.

RHINELAND3:

Belgian, British, and American forces assist you in pushing the German troops back east.

BERLIN LOST MISSIONS:

Two more missions that were going to take place in Berlin were scrapped.

BER1B:

The German Volssturm, a group of mainly civilian militia, fight against the invading Russian army.

The mission starts as you play as a German Civilian who bands together with his friends to defend Nazi Germany during the final days of the war.

You leave your wife and child as you promise them to return.

The mission will show things from the sides of the German civilians who were forced into the war against their will.

This is meant to humanize the enemies.

BER2B:

The World War two equivalent to 'No Russian,' this mission would have to play as a small group of renegade Russians going on a killing spree and killing the remnants of the Volssturm. Innocent civilians get caught in the crossfire as you massacre hundreds.

IWO JIMA:

Although not part of the original game or a scrapped level idea, I would love to see a level dedicated to Iwo Jima. Incorporate the soldiers raising the flag on the island of Iwo Jima on February 23rd, 1945.

NEW WEAPONS:

A Few weapons I thought would be cool to see added to World At War would be the following.

  • Grease Gun
  • Luger
  • Model 1912 Shotgun
  • Remington model 11 12gauge Shotgun
  • Hino–Komuro M1908 pistol
  • Machetes (Multiplayer cosmetic only)
  • Katanas (Multiplayer Cosmetic only)
  • Type 97 heavy tank machine gun

NEW GAMEPLAY MECHANICS:

2008 was a long time ago, and many improvements have been made to the Call Of Duty formula since World At War came out.

I thought the developers could add the slide mechanic from later games. For example, you will perform a slide when you push the crouch button while running instead of crouching.

Also, implement the function from Black Ops: Cold War, where you quickly press the reload button twice to detonate an explosive.

This would save you a few seconds from switching your gun to your detonator.

Add to this improved enemy AI, and you have a campaign that feels both old and new at the same time.

As for the multiplayer, there was a scrapped fourth Killstreak that Treyarch was planning to add; however, it was scrapped for some reason.

According to the Wiki, the fourth killstreak would have varied depending on your team.

They are listed as the following:

  • B-17 Flying Fortress. For the U.S. Marine Raiders, the B-17 would have been the fourth kill streak able to be obtained.
  • Katyusha Rocket Launcher. For the Red Army, vehicle-based Katyusha Rockets (visible in many missions) would have been obtainable.
  • Kamikaze. Kamikazes would have been obtainable as the fourth killstreak for the Japanese.
  • Carpet Bomber. For the Germans, the fourth killstreak would have been bombers, perhaps Fw 200 Condors (as seen in the pilot mission of the Russian campaign).

I can understand why the developers did not want to implement this feature, as it might make the game harder since you may want a kill streak that is unavailable for your team.

I would make it so that the fourth kill streak does the same thing regardless of what team you are on;

Just make it a cosmetic difference.

CUSTOMIZATION AND MODS:

When Bethesda allowed console players to add mods to the PS4 and Xbox One versions of Skyrim, some fans were ecstatic.

I can see it being a gesture of goodwill for the dev team to let console players play with the mods that PC owners of the game made.

Also, have an extensive customizability options list.

  • A gore meter-Implement the ability to choose how much gore you want in the game. Set the amount of on-screen gore you wish to see from low to high.
  • A classic visual and gameplay mode-Enables you to choose if you want to play the game with the visuals from 2008 and use the new or old gameplay features.
  • Fidelity mode and performance mode on consoles-Choose between 30 FPS 4K visuals and 60 FPS 1440p visuals for ninth-generation consoles.
  • Cheats- The original World At War had 13 death cards that you could pick up. There was one in each level (Except for the vehicle levels where you were in a tank and Airplane), and acquiring them unlocked cheats in the online co-op campaign. Maybe adding cheats to the single-player campaign, such as infinite ammo and paintballs, would be cool.

NO MICROTRANSACTIONS:

It should go without saying, but I don't want there to be any microtransactions in the game. Given that the majority of the microtransaction money Call Of Duty makes comes from Warzone, I think Activision could afford to make a Call Of Duty game with no microtransactions.

It would be a great way to garner goodwill from long-time and new fans who want to play a modern multiplayer game with no extra monetization assets.

This is probably not going to happen anytime soon. However, there is some hope for future Call Of Duty remakes now that Microsoft is in the middle of Purchasing Activision. Maybe they will give us something creative. After all, they canceled Call Of Duty 2023 for quality control, so maybe just maybe, they care enough about this franchise to want to return it to its former glory. A fan can hope, can't they? A fan can hope

Call Of Duty Vanguard Trailer thoughts and concerns

Call Of Duty World War 2 vanguard just got a trailer released today, and while it does look interesting, there were some things that I wanted to address.

First of all, this game is apparently going to cover all four fronts of World War 2:The Battle For North Africa, The Eastern Front of WW2, The Western Front of World War 2, and The Pacific front.

Given that the length of an average Call Of Duty campaign on Normal difficulty is about 3-4 hours, does this mean that we will only spend about one hour on each of the fronts?

Add to this the fact that this game is rumored to have less of a development time due to internal conflicts between Raven Software and Sledgehammer games over last years Call Of Duty; if you look at what's going on with a critical eye, then there are definitely some things that are worth discussing.

It's worth mentioning that I am a big history buff regarding the Pacific theater of World War 2.

In my previous blog, I detailed what I would have liked to have seen in a Call Of Duty game that focuses entirely on the Pacific Theater.

I am also a fanatic of well-written and well-designed Single Player Campaigns.

I know that single-player campaigns in FPS games are dying out, but I am still hoping that one day they will make a resurgence.

Games Such as Bioshock and Timesplitters are allegedly getting reboots, which makes me happy. But when it comes to grounded War First Person Shooters, Call Of Duty is pretty much the only game available now with a campaign worth playing.

Given how over the top and Michael Bay-ish Sledgehammer's last game, Call Of Duty WW2, turned out, I am skeptical that they will be able to provide somber moments to juxtapose the action.

World At War had one of my favorite campaigns in the series because, for as much action as that game had, there were moments where if you paced yourself and looked around every once in a while, you would get a sense of the horrors of War aspect by looking at what was going on around you.

That game didn't shove every explicitly horrible thing that the Nazis, Russians, or Japanese were doing in your face, trying to shock you.

There were even small moments where some of your teammates would argue amongst themselves on whether or not it was right to kill defenseless, unarmed soldiers in cold blood.

Moments like those are what made me respect the developers. It felt much more organic and less pretentious by giving the players things to discover naturally and at their own pace.

With four campaigns, it seems highly unlikely that the devs will fill them with scenes of nuance and grace.

The trailer looked like an action-packed Michael Bay movie.

Just compare it to the trailer for Call Of Duty World At War. Despite being only one minute and 5 seconds long, that trailer did a much better job setting the tone than the 3 minutes of tone-deaf action that Call Of Duty Vanguards trailer set.

World At War's trailer starts with an eerie atmosphere and shows many marines walking through terrain that they are not familiar with. After establishing through a narration that you are just some scared novice soldier who is in for the fight of your life, the action heats up.

It then cuts to your teammates being stabbed, lit on fire, and ambushed.

It didn't try to glamorize War; it was just as concerned with depicting these battles in the most authentic way possible within the game's age rating.

Looking at Call Of Duty Vanguard's trailer, I see a bunch of action with limited dialogue, and it ends with an over-the-top set-piece where your soldier jumps out of an airplane, his parachute gets burnt. He falls for thousands of feet and will probably survive like an invincible 1980's action hero.

The trailer did not get me thinking about how I would survive on my own or help me establish my own identity.

It made me feel like I was going through the motions, like on a roller coaster ride.

I understand that for most people who play Call Of Duty, the campaign is just used for marketing the game and teaching newcomers the basic mechanics to know how to play online. But I still hold onto a glimmer of hope that one day the people making these games will treat all their audiences with respect, not just the multiplayer and Warzone fanatics.

Speaking of which, Another thing that has me worried about the game is the ridiculous amount of RNG loot boxes and items that the devs can cram into them for the Multiplayer.

Since this game will cover every Front of World War 2, that means the devs will be able to put more weapons from said fronts into the game's single-player campaign.

Unlike 2017's Call OF Duty WW2, where you were only fighting in Europe, here it seems as though you will have access to every gun throughout all facets of the War.

This also means that the devs will have many more guns to put in the Lootboxes that you know will require you to grind forever to get enough in-game currency or spend ridiculous amounts of real money to acquire.

Another big concern for me is that the 9th gen console versions of the game are being held back by the devs making it for 8th gen consoles.

Whether we like it or not, the 8th gen consoles are antiquated. Hell, even at their release, they weren't as powerful as most people were hoping they would be.

I understand that these companies need to maximize their profits, and with a limited install base due to chip shortage, the 9th gen consoles are hard to acquire.

However, there have been many concerns that the 8th gen consoles are keeping the devs from developing this game at its full potential.

The last thing I'm hoping that this game doesn't do is to add a Zombies mode.

Not only was 2017's Call Of Duty WW2's Zombie mode was a soulless cash grab that lacked the fun of Treyarch's zombies; it also took away time that the developers could have put into making the Single-Player campaign better.

With four campaigns and a shorter development time than previous entries, I sincerely hope the devs don't announce a tact-on Zombies mode at the last minute.

I will pick this game up out of curiosity to see if Sledgehammer games can create something memorable, I will be skeptical, but I will do my best to be fair and impartial.

Here's hoping that sooner or later, these Call Of Duty devs can make a comeback and surprise us with a quality campaign, well-designed multiplayer maps, and respect for their fanbase.

Top Ten First Person Shooter games

Top Ten First Person Shooter Games

The following is a list of my personal top ten FPS games. Just to be clear this list is based on how much I personally enjoyed these games not how high I score them.

Also there are some rules. First off only 1 game per franchise. As much as I love Call Of Duty if I allowed more than 1 COD game on here this list would be full of them.

Second. As big a fan I am of the genre I haven’t played every FPS game ever so here are some popular ones that I haven’t played

Half-Life

Half-Life 2

Metro 2033

Metro Last Light

Perfect Dark ( I played the Multiplayer but I never got to play the singleplayer due to me not having a N64 expansion pack I didn’t get the Expansion pack until I lost my copy of the game)

Left 4 Dead

Left 4 Dead 2

Portal 2

GTA 5 First Person Mode.

Quake2

Halo Combat Evolved

Overwatch

Counter Strike

PUBG

Deus Ex

Titanfall

Titanfall 2

And Prey 2006

#10. SIngularity

No Caption Provided

One of RavenSoftware’s best; Singularity is an incredibly fun game that harkens back to the days of yesteryear. When it first came out it was heavily criticized for being a blatant rip off of Bioshock and Half-Life.

To that I say so what If your going to rip someone off then rip off the best.

It didn’t even sell a million copies when it came out because of poor marketing. If there is one game that needs a sequel/reboot it’s this one.

#9 Halo 2

No Caption Provided

My favorite Halo game. I remember back in 2004 when I was 11 years old and my friend invited me to his house to play this game all night.

The campaign was fun, but playing it with 2 people made it amazing. THis was when the franchise was at its peak. An innovative game with tons of replay value.

#8. Farcry 3:Blood Dragon

No Caption Provided

One of my favorite expansion packs ever; Far cry 3:Blood Dragon has everything fans of 1980’s action movies and Sci-Fci FPS fan could ask for.

#7. Timesplitters 2

No Caption Provided

The pinnacle of the franchise; Timesplitters 2 was fantastic. It’s such a shame that not many people talk about this game anymore; because whenever I do bring it up I’ve never met anyone who doesn’t like it.

#6 Bioshock Infinite

No Caption Provided

One of the defining games of the 7th Generation Bioshock infinite was a masterpiece.

#5 Star Wars Battlefront 2 (2005)

No Caption Provided

Not to be confused with 2017’s abomination

2005’s Star wars battlefront 2 is my favorite Star Wars game ever.

Though I played the majority of the game in 3rd person it is still technically an FPS.

#4 007 Goldeneye N64

No Caption Provided

I remember spending hours at my friends house when I was 6 years old playing this game. The amount of options in this game were just insane; the Single Player was so much fun, and showcased how to adapt a movie into a video game. The multiplayer had me sneaking out of my house to run over to my friends to have a 4 player gaming party. Some may criticize the game for its aged controls, but they never bothered me.

#3 Metroid Prime Trilogy.

No Caption Provided

I know I’m technically Cheating since this is a compilation of 3 games, but hey this is my list I can do whatever I want.

MEtroid Prime Trilogy is bursting with content. So much so I’m surprised the developers managed to fit it on the disc. You get three kickass games 2 of which have improved controls from their original Gamecube releases.

#2 Killzone 3

No Caption Provided

A modern masterpiece; Killzone 3 is one of the best action shooters ever made. It’s no wonder Destructoid gave it a perfect 10 out of 10 score when it came out. The multiplayer has so much to unlock that even after 7 years it’s still being played to this day. If you own a PS3 or PS4 this game is a must have.

Before I get to number 1 here are some honorable mentions from my personal favorites.

Soldier Of Fortune

Section 8 Prejudice

Quake

DOOM 2016

007 Nightfire

007 The World Is Not Enough (N64 Version)

#1 Call Of Duty Modern Warfare Remastered.

No Caption Provided

My all time favorite FPS game from one of my favorite developers, Ravensoftware; This genre defying masterpiece truly stood the test of time when it was remastered nearly 10 years later.

I already wrote a review explaining why this game is so amazing you can find it here.

Is Activision running their subsidiaries into the ground?

It's no secret that Activision is notorious for being a company that has lost more subsidiaries then they've kept. From the firing of Troika games to the recent "Merger" of Infinity ward and Neversoft Activision holds the track record for being the biggest bully in the video game industry. Electronic Arts quite possibly be tied for this title but it doesn't make Activision any less guilty. I have always been a fan of companies like Neversoft, and Eurocom. Two of the many companies that up until a few years ago held their own. Neversoft's Tony hawk pro Skater 2 will go down in history as one of the best sports games of all time, and Eurocoms' excellent track record with the James bond franchise up until the abysmal 007 Legends was released in 2012 were both aspects of the companies that they felt highly about.

if you want a visual on Activisions current track record for the companies that they have lost, then look at this list from their Wikipedia page.

The Blast Furnace in Leeds, United Kingdom, founded in November 2011 as Activision Leeds, renamed August 2012, shut down March 2014.

Gray Matter Interactive in Southern California, founded in the 1990s as Xatrix Entertainment, acquired January 2002, merged into Treyarch in 2005.

Infocom in Cambridge, Massachusetts, founded on June 22, 1979, acquired in 1986, closed in 1989.

Luxoflux in Santa Monica, California, founded in January 1997, acquired October 2002, closed February 11, 2010.[40]

Shaba Games in San Francisco, California, founded in September 1997, acquired in 2002, and closed on October 8, 2009.[41][42]

RedOctane in Mountain View, California, founded November 2005, acquired in 2006, closed February 11, 2010.[43]

Sierra Entertainment in Los Angeles, founded in 1979 as On-line Systems, acquired from the merger with Vivendi Games, closed in 2008.

Underground Development in Foster City, California, founded as Z-Axis in 1994, acquired in May 2002, closed February 11, 2010.[43]

Budcat Creations in Las Vegas, Nevada, founded September 2000, acquired on November 10, 2008. Closed November 2010.

7 Studios in West Los Angeles, Salt Lake City, Utah and Taipei, Taiwan, founded in 1999, acquired on April 6, 2009. Closed in February 2011.

Bizarre Creations in Liverpool, England, founded as Raising Hell Productions in 1987 and changed name in 1994, acquired on September 26, 2007.[44] Closed February 18, 2011.

Neversoft in Los Angeles, founded in July 1994, acquired October 1999, merged into Infinity Ward in 2014.[45]

Sold

Wanako Studios in New York City, founded in 2005, acquired by Vivendi Games on February 20, 2007, sold to Artificial Mind and Movement on November 20, 2008.

Swordfish Studios in Birmingham, England, founded in September 2002, acquired by Vivendi Universal Games in June 2005, sold to Codemasters on November 14, 2008.

Massive Entertainment in Malm, Sweden, founded in 1987, acquired by Vivendi Universal Games in 2002, sold to Ubisoft on November 10, 2008.

Now with a track record like this how can any company be comfortable working for them?

It's not just the companies that do poorly even the companies that do well get shafted by Activision. When High Moon Studios released Transformers Fall Of Cybertron back in August of 2012 to both commercial and critical success Activision repaid them by laying off half the staff.

So it's like this "Should I would hard and get laid off sooner, or slack off and extend my job security."

Seriously if your going to get canned no matter what then what incentive do you have to work hard. I love some of Activision's Subsidiaries, Raven Software is still functioning as a multiplayer developer for call of duty but that's about it. I hope Activisions current companies are not subject to the same treatment of their previous ones.

Top 10 hidden gems of the last console Generation

Top 10 HIdden gems of the 7th Console generation

With the 7th console generation all but confirmed dead I thought that it would be best to look back at some of the games that didn’t get anywhere near enough exposure.

Keep in mind this isn’t a popularity list just a list of games that I played and either didn’t do so well financially, critically or both.

#10 Asura’s Wrath

A great rhythm based beat em up Asura’s wrath may have had its shortcomings, not to mention an abysmal ending that required you to pay $7 if you wanted to see the rest, but it was overall a satisfying experience with a unique art style and lovable characters.

Total copies sold: 680,000

#9 Split/Second

A racing game that lets you alter the race track by gaining momentum, why didn’t this game sell again? Oh right it was ppublished by Disney so most people thought it would be terrible. The game offers a great sense of challenge and plenty of unlockables for replay value. Also even though it came out in 2010 the servers are still up, and people are still playing. Seriously people buy this game.

Total copies sold: 1.5 million

#8 G-Force.

Speaking of games published by Disney this awesome Action PLatformer developed by now defunct studio Eurocom is one of my favorite movie games ever. You play this watered down version of the movie with a paper thin plot, but who cares; I don’t. The stealth mechanics and platforming are awesome. Even the combat is fun and engaging. Think of it as Gears of war for kids. It’s such a shame that people probably just glanced over it and thought it was terrible. It never had a chance.

Total copies sold 390,000 (Ps3, and 360 versions only)

#7 Sonic And All Stars Racing Transformed:

My favorite Racing game of the 7th console generation ; yes even better than mario kart 7, and 8. The game had so much content to unlock and the variety of gameplay with your transforming vehicles was an absolute blast.

Total Copies Sold: 1.543 million copies

#6 Fragile Dreams: Farewell Ruins Of The Moon:

I was never a big fan of post-apocalyptic fiction, said for Neon Genesis Evangelion, and Fist Of The North Star, but this game really was incredible. Since the Nintendo Wii couldn’t render HD graphics, or a high frame rate this game compensated for it with a unique, well told story and exploration , over fighting hordes of enemies. Total Copies Sold: 370,000 units

#5. Spec-Ops: The Line:

A masterfly told story about the horrors of war this alternate take on the Military shooter genre sold badly, most likely because of lukewarm reception. Unlike many other games on this list I actually can understand why this game got the reviews it did. The story is incredible but it lacks replay value and the multiplayer was tacked on garbage.

Total Copies Sold: 1,200,000

#4. Radiant Historia:

My All time favorite Atlus game I would go as far as to say it is Even Better than Persona 4, and Chrono Trigger. A time travel story with a loveable cast of characters and over 60 hours of gameplay. The game was released twice, once on NIntendo DS, and once on 3DS, but sadly it never took off.

Total Copies Sold: 300,000 (DS) 50,00 (3DS)

#3 X-Men Origins Wolverine Uncaged Edition:

One of the best hack N slash games that is not God Of War; Wolverine Origins Uncaged Edition is one of the most memorable MOvie games Ever. Though there were some glitches that annoyed me, such as when an enemy through me outside of the play area forcing a reload. The sheer length of the game (around 10-12 hours) and amount of fun gore made this an exceptional title.

Total Copies SOld: 1,560,000

#2 Vanquish:

A Balls to the walls Action game that never got a sequel; Vanquish grabs you by the arm and never lets go. I only hope someday that Sega or someone will talk to Platinum Games about Publishing a sequel.

#1 Singulaity. A First Person Shooter with Time manipulation that doesn’t rely on bullet time like slow motion, and uses time travel to enhance the story not just as a gimmick *cough Timeshift cough*. This was my favorite Sci-Fi first person Shooter of the 7th generation and could have easily been franchised if the higher ups at Activision put any of their resources into advertising for it properly. The game was scraped at one point and Developer RavenSoft was only given 10 months to make it again from the ground up. Despite the odds against it, it was still a really fun game. This only goes to show how talented the people at Raven are. It’s such a shame that Activision is using them to do nothing more than work on Call Of Duty now. I hope someday we get either a sequel or the original version that was shown off at E3 2009. It’s just a matter of time.

Total Copies Sold: 650,000
