Hardcore? Sorry, no. Blizzard's servers aren't consistently good enough to never allow my Demon Hunter to double vault right back into an arcane sentry I just vaulted away from because of lag.
Plus, no, 'infinite lives' in D3 is not like a 'cheat code'. Old games had limited lives because they were very SHORT. Oh, lost all my lives in Super Mario Bros? Darn, that hour or two is down the drain. Oops, died in Contra AGAIN. Whelp, time to go back to the starting point that I was at 12 minutes ago. Permanent death in D3 would be more like permanent death in Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy, Pokemon or Earthbound. The super massive majority of large scale RPGs have NEVER had permanent death, even the really old ones. No, I don't want to have to RESTART my Pokemon game just for losing to the Elite Four once. People do Nuzlocke challenges for that, but no Pokemon fan would think that Nuzlocke challenges are 'the real game', and that people playing normally are 'doing it wrong'.
That said, this article is OLD, and the auction house doesn't exist anymore. Still though, I will stick to the version of D3 where I can't spend 100 hours on a character only for them to die because of lag.
@phillius81 "A slick beautiful looking fps.... With fantastic co op and multi player experiences. Which offers no lag and no frame rate drops. It's a work of art for something so early in a new consoles life."
Those are all the good qualities of the usual good FPS. Why not just play Halo? Sure, this is a new setting with a new name and slightly different gameplay, but the things that hold MMORPGs together do not seem to be present within destiny.
As yet another multiplayer first person shooter, it probably gets a 9.
But as an MMORPG, it probably gets a 2. People will play it for the same reason they play Halo, not for the same reasons people play WoW. People will just move on to whatever new awesome FPS comes out after destiny, because they won't be invested into the old one.
@phili878 I haven't played WoW, but from what the reviewer is saying it sound like destiny is simply lacking in the elements that make MMORPGs so 'magical' in a sense. You could write books about the world that WoW takes place in, with important recurring characters that become the cornerstones of the lore, interesting minor characters that bring life to monotonous questing and minor aspects of lore and pretty much an explanation for everything that exists within game.
What I am wondering is, is the only thing that sets this apart from other first person shooters the fact that you can equip various guns and armor? Loot and what not? Sure, you might personally find raids or whatever more fun than WoW, but what really sets those raids apart from the fights that would take place in regular FPS games?
It just started, so it has time, but what it needs to emphasize now is world building. Not combat, not repetitive quests and not soundtrack and art style. It needs to build a world to explore and engage in. It needs to focus on the minor details that some might think are unimportant.
Also, they should just bite the bullet and release it on PC. They have no idea how many more players would play it if they didn't have to put a new console just for it. Especially considering the majority of MMORPG gamers are PC gamers.
