Steve509's 2009 Primetime Emmy Picks

With the 61st Primetime Emmy Awards nominations just a week away, I thought I would submit my picks as to who should be nominated in each major category. Just my opinion, please enjoy and feel free to comment.

Best Television Show - Drama

Breaking Bad (AMC)

ER (NBC)

Friday Night Lights (DirecTV/NBC)

Mad Men (AMC)

True Blood (HBO)

Out of these five shows, ER is on there simply because it was the last season of a long-running well-respected drama series. Breaking Bad and Mad Men both are terrific shows and both shows' second seasons were unforgettable. Friday Night Lights is a great, wholesome show with some amazing acting and some very controversial storylines. Lastly, True Blood is my personal favorite because how could the Academy not love the twisted story that is that show.

Outstanding Television Series - Comedy

30 Rock (NBC)

The Big Bang Theory (CBS)

Eastbound & Down (HBO)

The Office (NBC)

Two & A Half Men (CBS)

The perennial winner, 30 Rock, proves to be the strong hold this year too. But with the popularity of The Big Bang Theory and the funny cast, it may be a close second. The Office and Two & A Half Men both are Academy favorites and are, in my opinion, nominated strictly out of respect the Academy has for the shows. Finally, if you haven't seen Eastbound & Down on HBO, you really should check it out. It is pure comedy gold from the brilliant mind that is Will Ferrell.

Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series

Alec Baldwin, 30 Rock (NBC)

Steve Carell, The Office (NBC)

Danny McBride, Eastbound & Down (HBO)

Jim Parsons, The Big Bang Theory (CBS)

Tony Shaloub, Monk (USA)

Charlie Sheen, Two & A Half Men (CBS)

Since the Academy usually announces six men in the best actor category for comedy, I think this is a pretty close pick as to what the Emmys could be looking for this year. Charlie Sheen and Tony Shaloub are also Emmy faves but the biggest dual should be between Jim Parsons and Danny McBride. Alec Baldwin is a fave of mine, but he can give up his comedy crown for a year.

Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series

Tina Fey, 30 Rock (NBC)

Teri Hatcher, Desperate Housewives (ABC)

Julia Louis-Dreyfus, The New Adventures of Old Christine (CBS)

Mary-Louise Parker, Weeds (Showtime)

Amy Poehler, Parks & Recreation (NBC)

Ok, this was an interesting choice, since there really are not too many comedies starring women. I think Tina Fey is the clear winner as 30 Rock would not be as funny without her. Teri Hatcher had a very funny year on DH and deserves at least a nod. Past winner Julia Louis-Dreyfus is another good pick because Emmy voters love her. Mary-Louise would be a wise choice since she has never won the Emmy in this category and newcomer Amy Poehler has many more years to get a win.

Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series

Bryan Cranston, Breaking Bad (AMC)

David Duchovny, Californication (Showtime)

Michael C. Hall, Dexter (Showtime)

Jon Hamm, Mad Men (AMC)

Stephen Moyer, True Blood (HBO)

Bill Paxton, Big Love (HBO)

Again, I have chosen six, as this is what the Emmy's did last year. Of course there are so many people I have NOT put on this list, but of the leading men in television, I believe these six are the strongest and the best. Last years winner, Cranston, is expected to get another nod, but may not win. David Duchovny in Californication this past season was incredible. I will never see him as Agt Fox Mulder ever again! Jon Hamm of Mad Men is almost a shoe-in because Mad Men is such a great show, but would love to see one of the HBO guys, either Stephen (aka Vampire Bill) or Bill (Mormon-doting husband and father), win.

Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series

Angela Bassett, ER (NBC)

Glenn Close, Damages (FX)

Holly Hunter, Saving Grace (TNT)

Anna Paquin, True Blood (HBO)

Kyra Sedgwick, The Closer (TNT)

Jeanne Tripplehorn, Big Love (HBO)

Again, there are dozens of leading ladies I would love to have put in this category, but the top six, in my opinion, are here. The portrayal of a hard-nosed, no-nonsense chief of medicine, Angela Bassett blew me away. I remember how well she can act from the Tina Turner story but this woman can do anything. Jeanne Tripplehorn (Barb from Big Love) would also be a great win because her character went through a whole lot of crap this past season and she did a great job making me believe and feel her pain. Anna Paquin and Holly Hunter (who, coincidentally, both won Oscars in 1992 for their daughter-mother roles in The Piano. Both actresses are strong leads and both deserve to win. Kyra is a good pick, as she has never won this category, but has won the Golden Globe equivalent three years ago. Last year's winner, Close, could walk away with the gold yet again after a solid performance as Patty Hewes in Damages.

These are my picks for the six major categories. Please feel free to comment and let me know if you agree or disagree. It will be interesting to see what the outcome is when the nominees are announced on July 16.

Let's Talk About NBC's Fall Schedule

It was revealed this week that NBC would start it's fall season one week earlier than the traditional fall premiere week and as I am really exciting about some returning favorites, I have a huge bone to pick with NBC. I would like to write a letter to NBC and have it be something like this:

Dear NBC,

So, you are going to dedicate the coveted 10pm hour to a mediocre comic? Really, it's not too late, you can still back out. Ok, I will say you do have the cajones to do this, but I have to say I have a small problem with this.

First off, you are premiering your series premiere of The Jay Leno Show on Monday, September 14. Do you have something planned HUGE to air from 8pm-10pm OR are you really going to air an encore episode, albeit the season finale, of Law & Order: Criminal Intent? I love CI but I watch the first-run on the USA Network and do not even watch it on its re-airings on NBC. So is there some huge event planned? Guess I will have to wait and see.

So when people watch Jay on Monday night and love him or hate him, they may try out Tuesday to see if anything is different or funnier. At least you decided to air the season premiere of The Biggest Loser on the 15th. Kudos.

Wednesday is another lull day for you, with nothing premiering, but maybe airing the season finales of Law & Order and Law & Order SVU may bring you some ratings. Maybe.

I am stoked about Thursday - you got this right! Airing a two-hour definite comedy block before airing Jay is a good idea, but I fear people may not stick through for a third hour of comedy, especially when CBS has moved The Mentalist to Thursdays at 10pm.

Friday of this week is just like Monday and Wednesday. I really do not understand why you did not just wait until Sept 21 to air everything. The only networks airing new shows earlier are Fox and the CW.

I am looking forward to Monday, Sept. 21 with the two-hour season premiere of Heroes. I really hope that this season is not disappointing and I hope the move to 8pm does not hurt its following. After looking at the other nets and what they are airing at 8pm, I fear Heroes may not do so well. You have it going up against House at 8pm on Fox and popular comedy How I Met Your Mother and new comedy Accidentally on Purpose on CBS. I would have kept Heroes at 9pm and aired new drama Trauma at 8pm. With the 9pm hour you would most likely come in third place after CBS and ABC (I definitely think Heroes could beat Lie to Me in the 9pm hour) but instead it will go up against CBS comedies, a Fox powerhouse and The Bachelor on ABC. I secretly think you like it in fourth place.

Tuesdays, are not for me. The Biggest Loser is a good show, but will be watching other networks this night.

Wednesdays should be interesting. You may have a chance of doing well during 8pm-10pm. The new drama Parenthood looks promising, as long as it's given a fair chance. With the move to 9pm on Wednesdays, I was worried about SVU. I do have a lot of confidence in SVU and think it will do really well.

Fridays look like this will be a promising night. With Law & Order at 8pm and Southland at 9pm, I think this could be a new favorite night of television. I am very disappointed in you that you just threw Medium to the curb and thankfully CBS picked it up and am almost certain Medium will post much higher ratings on CBS than it did on NBC.

Sorry, NBC, I am not a Jay Leno fan and think you could be making a big mistake here, but someone is getting paid a lot of money there to make these decisions. I hope it pays off in the end for you. I will watch Jay the first week, but cannot guarantee I will watch faithfully. There are so many good shows that are on during the 10pm hour on the other networks that I will have to check out, especially The Mentalist on Thursdays.

I say good luck to you this fall NBC. You will need it.

Is ER getting too sexy??

I know there have been a ton of blogs, articles, stories on this subject but there is one reason why I am writing this today! I just watched the newest episode of "ER", the first one back from the writers strike and I could have swore I was watching "Grey's Anatomy"! Now, I am not by any means a stickler, but one of the reasons why I love "ER" is because they focus more on the patients the come into County General or the characters' platonic personal lives. I know that television needs to be competitive in this time, especially in this coveted time slot, but the only thing that "ER" is going up against on Thursday night is "Without A Trace" and "Eli Stone". I know that WAT beats "ER" almost every week, but for a veteran show, "ER" still remains getting 8-10 million viewers every week. I do not mind the whole relationship aspect of the characters that we see on ER. In fact, I welcome it so that we, the viewers, can see what our favorite characters go through so that we can relate to them. But, with the episode opening with the newest attending physician at County General in bed with two beautiful women, and we have not even been introduced to him yet, nor do we even know who he is, is a little over the top. I understand that the writers want us to get the point the Dr. Simon Brenner is a ladies man, perhaps a "pimp", but let's be realistic. I have tried to tell women before that I am a doctor or a lawyer or some powerful business executive and it has never gotten me two women at the same time! Then we get to Sam Taggert and Tony Gates whose relationship is starting to bloom, and I am perfectly happy with that, but they just go at it right in an exam room! There was a little too much sex in the first episode of ER back from the break, but I am happy to have it back!

We are getting screwed!!

I am a huge television fan and have found myself browsing other internet websites to get information on my favorite television shows. I have been logging on to thefutoncritic.com for a while now and today they posted all of the shows that I watch on every network and how many remaining episodes of each show are left. First off let me say, I am sooooooo happy that TV is back again, but when I clicked on certain shows, for example, The Office, it says that due to the strike, only 19 of the season's 30 episodes were getting made. I was pissed, not only because I love The Office, but the fact that these writers made us TV fans wait for almost 4 months and now we get at best 5 to 6 new episodes before a long summer break? You tell me how that is fair. This is what I believe should happen - These writers finally got what they wanted, right? Therefore, they should be writing episodes well into the summer and continue to produce new episodes until the full seasons order is complete. In most cases, there are only like 3 to 4 shows that are not getting made. "ER" would be my example for that...there are 19 episodes getting made but there was a total of 23 supposed to be shot. Is it really that much to not make those other 4 episodes? I think if television writers, producers, and actors want America to continue to watch what they are good at doing best, they should make us happy by giving us what we want! We are going to be subjected, in most cases, with repeats from mid-May through mid-September! It almost makes me think that I should just boycott television altogether and just start becoming a movie junkie, because there is none of this whiney-ness in the movie industry.
