What valid issues? The president has no real power when trying to fix the economy. It's all about convincing stupid congressmen and senators who know nothing about economics that government intervention is needed.
In a recession the only thing to blame is the consumers and the unions. People don't realize that consumer spending fixes recessions but everyone is instead saving up money and making the situation worse. Then the unions who are filled with incompetent fools refuse to accept lower wages from firms, so firms need to lay off thousands of workers.
As for the deepwater horizon, the law prevents government intervention when it come's to a firms affairs. The president has no power and is a mere scapegoat.
Convincing congress and the senate is like teaching a bunch of monkeys how to fix a lightbulb. They try and when they figure out that they can't do it they start throwing feces at each other.
Politicians should never be in government. The country should be run by economists and engineers.

Very well put.Although, assuming you meant it seriously, I don't think your last statement is good. The purpose of having any form of leadership is to have as few figures who we want to make decisions for us as possible, as a means of simplifying our lives. I think politicians should be able to exist and form government. The problem with our current state is that people have a bad formula for evaluating leadership. Generally, it's who has a cool, savvy personality and who is academically qualified. Obviously, both properties have nothing to do with actually being good at what they're striving for.
Having engineers and economists is no better. I don't know about engineers, but I've seen many economists who are agenda-ridden and would lie to themselves to maintain justification for their beliefs. You simply go from biased law students to biased economic students.
The problem is, striving for a formula of objective qualities to solve the problems. They don't exist. The fact that someone is academically trained in a certain area does not mean he is realistically competent at it when in the real, uncontrolled environment. And even if they're competent, what do you do with "social issues"? And, why is he fit for decision making outside of what he professionally specializes in? The fact that he's something holds no weight in comparison to whether or not he is a smart/ has great perspective.
We need to get away from academic-based qualifications in every walk of life. It's an objective concept, but not having to do with reality.
